Infection Prevention In Patients Receiving Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy Through Proper Hemodialysis Line Care, Nicole Ingram, Susan Mckenna Jan 2020

Infection Prevention In Patients Receiving Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy Through Proper Hemodialysis Line Care, Nicole Ingram, Susan Mckenna

VCU Health Nursing

The goal was to reduce Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)-related Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) rates by introducing a just-in-time re-education toolkit for proper hemodialysis (HD) line care in adult Intensive Care Units (ICU).

CRRT requires specialized expertise delivered in the ICU setting with the support of HD nurses. Problem-solving when cartridges clot or clog requires ICU nurses to return the blood and notify HD to restart therapy. Current evidence supports the use of white CurosTM caps and TegoTM connectors when deaccessing lines in order to prevent CLABSIs, air emboli, and bleeding. A learning needs assessment revealed inconsistent …

Hannah Hollon, MD, Darina Dinov, DO, Elizabeth Wolf, MD, MPH

Background: Gun violence is the second leading cause of death in children, and one third of children in the United States live with a gun in the home.1 Despite this public health challenge, there is a lack of firearm safety education in residency programs. One study from 1997 surveyed pediatric residencies across the country and found that 34% of programs reported having formal firearm safety education as part of their curricula. The programs cited lack of trained personnel, educational …

Improving Resident Understanding Of Healthcare Business And Policy Through The Development Of A High-Yield And Dynamic Educational Series, John Legge

Health Sciences Education Symposium

Objective: Residents have a strong desire to be engaged in and learn about the financial and societal impact of health care delivery and reform initiatives1,2. In order to address this need, a Business and Health Policy Educational Series was developed, with positive feedback from participating residents. Implementation Of A Multi-Pronged Approach To Improve Education In Quality Improvement (Qi) And To Increase Resident Involvement In Qi Work, Ashlie Tseng

Health Sciences Education Symposium

Objective: To evaluate a multi-tiered approach to incorporating QI and PS training and participation in a pediatrics residency program. Methods: We developed a multi-tiered approach to QI/PS training during the 2013-14 year, and expanded upon it during subsequent years. We tracked resident participation in Departmental QI Grand Rounds and ACGME and Department survey results. The initial intervention involved didactic and small group sessions/to facilitate project development. We also instituted Departmental QI Grand Rounds. In the following year (2014-15), we increased the number of didactics and started a practice improvement project within the resident group practice where residents were provided individualized …

The First Five Minutes: Enhancing Simulation Education For First-Year Pediatric Residents, Megan E. Coe Jan 2017

The First Five Minutes: Enhancing Simulation Education For First-Year Pediatric Residents, Megan E. Coe

Health Sciences Education Symposium

We are looking at the feasibility of redesigning the existing simulation education for first-year residents within the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU’s pediatric residency program to increase learning opportunities and to enhance exposure to pediatric medical emergencies. Novel simulation scenarios were designed to provide an introduction to managing the first five minutes of commonly encountered emergencies on the inpatient wards. These shortened simulations allow for educational objectives to be tailored to the expected knowledge and responsibilities of first-year residents.
