The Lived Experiences Of Student Nurses During Simulation Of Perinatal Loss, Paloma Alejandra Peña
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the experiences and perceptions of undergraduate nursing students in providing care following a perinatal loss simulation. The theories that guided this study included Malcolm Knowles’ Theory of Andragogy and the National League for Nursing Jeffries Simulation. The selected theories provide structure for adult learners’ need to experience situational learning activities that are relevant to their job while building upon the foundation of students’ knowledge. Incorporation of Knowles’ and Jeffries’ theories guides the qualitative study of the simulation of a perinatal loss and the experiences of nursing students in providing care during …

Purpose/Background
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common, chronic disease that increases the risk of coronary artery disease and stroke fourfold, which makes protecting cardiac function a priority. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and American Heart Association (AHA) recommend the prescription of statins to reduce cardiovascular complications. Unfortunately, provider and patient adherence to this recommendation is poor. This study aimed to determine if shared-decision making and patient follow-up within a 6 month period of being newly diagnosed with T2D has an effect on the initiation rate of statin therapy.
Methods
In this retrospective study we requested data from the University …
Implementation Of A Continuing Education Module On Triage Practices For Pediatric Emergency Room Nurses, Catherine Nicholson, Lindsey Lakas, Marian Malone
Implementation Of A Continuing Education Module On Triage Practices For Pediatric Emergency Room Nurses, Catherine Nicholson, Lindsey Lakas, Marian Malone
Graduate Publications and Other Selected Works - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
BACKGROUND: More than 35 million U.S. children visit the emergency department (ED) each year. Triage is the family’s first interaction with the healthcare team and a crucial component of care that directs the course of the ED visit. The use of standardized triage protocols, like the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) algorithm, is shown to improve overall patient health outcomes in the pediatric ED. For triage algorithms to be safe and effective, continuing education for pediatric ED nurses is important.
LOCAL PROBLEM: Patients at a local pediatric emergency department are being inaccurately triaged - assigned a higher or lower acuity level …

Continued increase in prevalence of type 2 diabetes indicates need for more effective interventions to support lifestyle and behavior changes (ADA 2018).
• Evidence indicates attending diabetes self management education programs can improve diabetes outcomes, unfortunately they are often under referred and underutilized (Powers et al. 2015, Boakye et al. 2018).
• Limited class times, locations, and capacities can make attendance for all patients difficult and vulnerable populations are less likely to participate (Boakye et al. 2018).
• Diabetes education programs often lack culturally and individually relevant guidance, provide no long-term …

Affective Domain Development In Virtual Education: Visual Thinking Strategies And Art Pedagogy, Jayne Josephsen
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Development of the affective domain is linked to increasing self-awareness of internal dialogue, such as biases and assumptions, which can affect the ability of nurses to engage in person-centered care and meet the identified patient outcomes. Through visual thinking strategies (VTS) paired with art-based pedagogy to examine grief, loss, and bereavement concepts in a hospice and palliative care nursing virtual education course, affective domain development was advanced. Foundational to this virtual educational intervention was using the VTS framework of questions and pairing them with art-based pedagogy promoting open-ended interpretation and response to the art presented. This assisted the students in …

Healthcare technology is constantly evolving to find ways to help provide better outcomes for patients. Clinical monitoring is technology that helps healthcare staff recognize deterioration of the patient which allows them to intervene earlier, which increases the patient’s chance for survival. The monitors are connected to the patients to monitor vital signs such as heart rate, oxygen saturation, respirations, and blood pressures. They allow staff to get real time feedback of the patient’s condition and determine if the patient is getting better or any interventions need to be done due to clinical deterioration.
However, all technology has setbacks and downfalls. …

Introduction
In 2020, the World Health Organization called for the expansion and greater recognition of all nursing roles, including advanced practice nurses (APNs), to better meet patient care needs. As defined by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the two most common APN roles include nurse practitioners (NPs) and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs). They help ensure care to communities as well as patients and families with acute, chronic or complex conditions. Moreover, APNs support providers to deliver high quality care and improve access to services. Currently, there is much variability in the use of advanced practice nursing roles globally. A …
