Mental health is an often-overlooked aspect of overall health and wellness (well-being). Mental illness is increasingly common with 1 in 5 American adults experiencing it annually, and 1 in 20 suffering from a serious mental illness each year [1]. Treatment rates for mental illness are lower in men (37.4%) compared to women (51.2%) [1]. Globally, treatment rates are similar with an estimated cost to the global economy of $1 trillion annually, yet less than 2% of government health expenditure is for mental health worldwide [2]. Despite this, only nine studies have been published specifically targeting men’s mental health through lifestyle …

The Mentored Experience To Enhance Opportunities In Research (Meteor) Program., Lisa Schwartz, Naomi Luban, Alison Hall, Diane Mcquail, Yolanda Haywood

Health Sciences Education Research

PROBLEM: Medical students from groups that are underrepresented in medicine are less likely to pursue careers that incorporate research as compared to their white peers. Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA)-funded institutions encouraged centers to establish short-term, mentored summer research opportunities to motivate students underrepresented in medicine to enroll in medical school and ideally choose a career that incorporates research into their clinical practice.

APPROACH: The Mentored Experience To Enhance Opportunities in Research (METEOR) Program was established in 2012 in partnership with the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Children's National (CTSI-CN) and The George Washington University (GW) School of …

Should Mindfulness For Health Care Workers Go Virtual? A Mindfulness-Based Intervention Using Virtual Reality And Heart Rate Variability In The Emergency Department., King Pascual, Amiad Fredman, Athanasios Naum, Chaitrali Patil, Neal Sikka

Health Sciences Education Research

BACKGROUND: Research on burnout in the medical community has extensively studied the impact of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), which can include meditation, outdoor retreats, in-person didactics, and/or online wellness modules. However, in addition to these MBIs lacking objective, physiological measures for wellness, there has been little to no research involving virtual reality (VR) as an MBI modality for healthcare professionals in the United States.

METHODS: A randomized controlled intervention trial was used to study the impact of VR-based guided-meditations in the form of brief paced-breathing exercises. Heart-rate variability (HRV), a biomarker for relaxation, was measured during each session. Thirty-two participants, consisting …

Addressing The Underdiagnosis Of Familial Hypercholesterolemia: A Mixed Methods Study Exploring The Knowledge And Practice Behaviors Of Cardiology Healthcare Providers, Isha Kalia Ms, Mph, Cgc

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder that is vastly underdiagnosed and undertreated. FH causes lifelong elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, resulting in an increased risk for coronary heart disease, myocardial infarctions, and sudden cardiac death. Cardiology healthcare providers (CHCPs) are in an ideal position to not only screen cardiology patients for FH but also to diagnose and manage FH patients.

Objectives: Describe the practice behaviors of CHCPs in the screening, diagnosis, and management of FH, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the perspectives of CHCPs regarding FH screening and diagnostic interventions that can be implemented in …

Lost In Translation? Communicating Nutrition Science, Lindsay Yarabek Datlow Jul 2022

Lost In Translation? Communicating Nutrition Science, Lindsay Yarabek Datlow

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Diet is directly correlated with overall health; therefore, nutrition is a critical piece of the obesity-epidemic puzzle. The news media has become a primary source for nutrition information yet results from International Food Information Council surveys indicate that the majority of Americans view the nutrition news they read as inconsistent and confusing. Very recent inquiry provides empirical evidence that nutrition confusion could be fueled by media. Nutrition confusion has been causally linked to “nutrition backlash,” which is complete disregard for even the most strongly supported nutrition advice. Understanding how nutrition research is translated in the news media and the mechanisms …

Characterization And Assessment Of Barriers And Facilitators To The Decision-Making Process For Blood And Blood Donor Safety In The United States: A Collective Case Study, Lauren A. Crowder Jul 2022

Characterization And Assessment Of Barriers And Facilitators To The Decision-Making Process For Blood And Blood Donor Safety In The United States: A Collective Case Study, Lauren A. Crowder

Doctor of Philosophy in Translational Health Sciences Dissertations

Background: Over 16 million blood components are transfused to patients in need every year in the United States (Jones et al., 2021). Because of the reliance on human blood donors, the donation and transfusion of blood will always be associated with some level of risk for both donors and recipients; the tolerability of these risks may vary from stakeholder to stakeholder. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concedes that attaining a blood supply with zero risk for transmission of infectious diseases may be unattainable (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2019), they continue to strive for the lowest …

Social Media Use By Residents And Faculty In Otolaryngology Training Programs., Vrinda Gupta, Stephanie J Braverman, Johnny P Mai, Michael Noller, Macario Camacho, Anthony M Tolisano, Philip E. Zapanta

Health Sciences Education Research

OBJECTIVES: Despite the growth of social media in healthcare, the appropriateness of online friendships between otolaryngological residents and attendings is poorly defined in the current literature. This issue is of growing importance, particularly as residency programs increasingly utilize social media as a means of connecting with and evaluating applicants due to limited in-person experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objective was to better understand the prevalence of and concerns surrounding social media use between residents and faculty.

METHODS: This study sent out 2 surveys in 2017 to all United States Otolaryngology residency program directors to disperse to their residents and …

Delineating The Field Of Medical Education: Bibliometric Research Approach(Es)., Lauren A Maggio, Anton Ninkov, Jason R Frank, Joseph A Costello, Anthony R. Artino

Health, Human Function, and Rehabilitation Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The field of medical education remains poorly delineated such that there is no broad consensus of articles or journals that comprise 'the field'. This lack of consensus indicates a missed opportunity for researchers to generate insights about the field that could facilitate conducting bibliometric studies and other research designs (e.g., systematic reviews) and also enable individuals to identify themselves as 'medical education researchers'. Other fields have utilised bibliometric field delineation, which is the assigning of articles or journals to a certain field in an effort to define that field.

PROCESS: In this Research Approach, three bibliometric field delineation approaches-information …

From Digital Commons To Alma/Primo: A Systems Interoperability Project, Sara Hoover, Jolinda L. Thompson

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

Background: In 2018 our library migrated to Ex Libris’s Alma and its discovery service Primo. Alma allows content from OAI-PMH compliant archives to be loaded to Primo for discovery. Our library has a Digital Commons institutional repository (IR) system and librarians were eager to explore including IR content in Primo. Post-migration a feed was established between the IR and Primo, but there were issues with adding all IR content and the feed was removed. Consequently, we wanted to explore alternatives that would allow for the integration of more selective IR content.

Description: For our pilot project, we explored the possibility …

PURPOSE: Although there is a growing evidence base on the drivers of child marriage, comparatively little is known about the experiences of married girls in refugee settings and how their development trajectories diverge from those of their nonmarried peers, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on cross-national panel data from Bangladesh and Jordan, this article explores diversity in child marriage experiences in contexts affected by forced displacement, highlighting how married girls' well-being differs from that of their unmarried peers, and how COVID-19 has reinforced these differences.

METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal survey data-collected pre- and post-COVID-19-from the Gender …
