Efficacy Of Various Interventions For Achieving Target Hba1c Levels For Patients With Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus And On Exogenous Insulin, Caitlin S. Welch, Archie Troxel Aug 2022

Efficacy Of Various Interventions For Achieving Target Hba1c Levels For Patients With Type Ii Diabetes Mellitus And On Exogenous Insulin, Caitlin S. Welch, Archie Troxel

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Objective: To learn the rates at which patients at UT Family Medicine–St. Francis (UTFM–SF) with type II diabetes mellitus are being prescribed recommended medications—namely metformin, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP1RAs)—whether these rates correspond to the severity of hyperglycemia (as indicated by HbA1C level). A secondary goal of the study was to investigate if HbA1C levels are being checked at recommended intervals.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted using records of patients seen at the clinic in the previous four years between the ages of 18 and 65 who had visits with ICD …

Investigating The Correlation Between Lpr & Obesity, Andrew S. Franklin Bs, Chad A. Nieri Bs, M. Boyd Gillespie Md Aug 2022

Investigating The Correlation Between Lpr & Obesity, Andrew S. Franklin Bs, Chad A. Nieri Bs, M. Boyd Gillespie Md

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Objectives: To determine whether Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE) findings of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) correlate with obesity, gender, Epworth Sleepiness scale, and OSA severity.

Study design: Single center retrospective cohort study.

Methods: Patients greater than 18 years of age who underwent DISE by one surgeon at a tertiary care center from July 2016 to July 2022 were included. DISE findings, patient characteristics, demographics, polysomnogram(s), and Epworth Sleepiness Scale(s) were extracted. Fisher’s exact test was used to compare categorical variables, and independent sample t-test was used to compare continuous variables. All statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 28.

Results: …

Effects Of Dietary Ω-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (N-3 Pufa) In Light Sensitivity Of Retinas Of Mice Models To Prevent Retinal Damage, Aaron Eugene Rice Aug 2022

Effects Of Dietary Ω-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (N-3 Pufa) In Light Sensitivity Of Retinas Of Mice Models To Prevent Retinal Damage, Aaron Eugene Rice

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Light-induced retinal degeneration (LIRD) causes photoreceptor cell death in albino mice after exposure to high intensity light for a set period of time (6-24 hours). This causes retinal photoreceptor cell death through apoptosis. From several previous studies, Dr. Mandal’s lab concluded that de novo biosynthesis of ceramide mediates photoreceptor cell death in a LIRD model. Previous studies in Dr. Mandal’s lab has shown that mouse models with higher endogenous ω-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (n-3 PUFA) generates less ceramide upon neuronal injury and prevent neurodegeneration (Mol Neurobio 2021). There are currently not many available effective therapies for retinal degeneration in humans …

Utility Of Av Nodal Characteristics In Identification Of Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia And Risk Of Recurrence, Kimberly M. Decarr Jul 2022

Utility Of Av Nodal Characteristics In Identification Of Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia And Risk Of Recurrence, Kimberly M. Decarr

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

Background: Catheter ablation of the slow atrioventricular (AV) nodal pathway is a safe and effective treatment for atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT). While AVNRT occurs frequently in both children and adults, pediatric patients experience higher rates of AVNRT recurrence.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to characterize changes in AV nodal conduction properties following catheter ablation and correlate these properties with AVNRT recurrence in pediatric patients.

Methods: This was a retrospective review of patients aged(AVRT) at a single tertiary care center between January 01, 2010 and September 01, 2021. Demographics, pre- and post-ablation ECG intervals, and AV nodal conduction …

Using Digital Storytelling To Assess Patient Experience With Management Of Diabetes In Everyday Life (Model) Study Intervention, Arati Joshi Apr 2022

Using Digital Storytelling To Assess Patient Experience With Management Of Diabetes In Everyday Life (Model) Study Intervention, Arati Joshi

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

African Americans are disproportionately affected by obesity-associated diabetes compared to their White counterparts. While social determinants of health may contribute to their poor health outcomes, studies have shown that pragmatic primary care-based interventions can be effective in improving the management of obesity-associated diabetes. The Management of Diabetes in Everyday Life (MODEL) is a pragmatic randomized comparative effectiveness trial of three approaches (health coaching, text-messaging, and enhanced usual care) to supporting medically underserved African American patients with uncontrolled diabetes in improving their self-care decisions. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of the MODEL program participation on the …

Using Crispr Gene Editing To Prevent Accumulation Of Lipids In Hepatocytes, Erin Young, Cem Kuscu, Christine Watkins, Murat Dogan Jan 2022

Using Crispr Gene Editing To Prevent Accumulation Of Lipids In Hepatocytes, Erin Young, Cem Kuscu, Christine Watkins, Murat Dogan

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

CRISPR gene editing is a molecular technology that can be used to silence gene expression. In this experiment, genes that are known to play a role in lipid accumulation in hepatocytes were targeted. Specifically, levels of fatty acid transport proteins 2 and 5 (FATP2 & 5) have been shown to be elevated in cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The goal of this experiment was to reduce expression of these genes by using a dead Cas9 (dCas9) protein with an attached inhibitory domain (KRAB) that acts on the promotor region. When measuring the mRNA expression, it was determined that the …

On-Treatment Changes In Pediatric Parameningeal Rhabdomyosarcoma Treated With Upfront Proton Therapy, Jacob Allen Jordan Jan 2022

On-Treatment Changes In Pediatric Parameningeal Rhabdomyosarcoma Treated With Upfront Proton Therapy, Jacob Allen Jordan

Longitudinal Scholar's Project

The project is focused on the effects of longitudinal changes in patient and tumor anatomy on the delivered treatment plan during proton radiotherapy for the treatment of pediatric Para meningeal rhabdomyosarcoma. The study will investigate the effects of change on dose delivered to organs-at-risk near the tumor. This effort will extend the analysis of changes to the organs-at-risk to all the cases in the study and add an additional case meeting the study criteria.
