Objective: In this study we implemented the “flipped classroom” model to enhance active learning in medical students taking neurosciences module at Aga Khan University, Karachi.
Methods: Ninety eight undergraduate medical students participated in this study. The study was conducted from January till March 2017. Study material was provided to students in form of video lecture and reading material for the non-face to face sitting, while face to face time was spent on activities such as case solving, group discussions, and quizzes to consolidate learning under the supervision of faculty. Participation in research and scholarly activity is critical to successful medical student and resident matriculation and to faculty development. Both Marshall University and West Virginia University sponsor yearly peer-reviewed School of Medicine Research Days’ to support these missions. This article evaluates the successful publication of Research Day presentations for West Virginia’s Allopathic Medical Schools. Both Marshall University (MU) and West Virginia University’s (WVU) School of Medicine use a competitive review process for abstract selection ensuring high quality research is presented. Over a 10-year period, MU published 12% (74/616) of its abstracts while WVU published 22% (265/1185) of its abstracts. We …

Background: Studies show that family centered rounds (FCR) improve family satisfaction by involving the families in their children’s care. Medical students consistently find FCR beneficial to families but have differing attitudes regarding benefits to the medical team. Some concerns raised by the students include longer rounds, decreased bedside teaching, and lack of opportunities to improve FCR skills. We developed a FCR simulation to aid medical students in FCR presentation.

Healthcare team functioning requires coordination and collaboration between multiple practitioners towards a common goal of delivering safe and quality patient care (Lemieux-Charles & McGuire, 2006). Communication patterns, leadership, mutual support, and situation monitoring are all processes of effective teams (Weaver et al, 2010). However, despite the growing focus on developing interprofessional teams, minimal focus is given to the contextual and cultural forces influencing healthcare team functioning. Medical students' mental health is a topic of great interest as it has implications not only for medical students but also for the patients of these future doctors. Medical students face many academic pressures and burnout is one possible consequence of these stressors with some studies suggesting that burnout affects up to 50% of medical students. Our own study of American students in a medical programme located outside of the U.S. showed that student perceptions of the medical learning environment were linked with burnout suggesting that reducing burnout requires a pedagogical approach that addresses academically related stress factors.
