Effectiveness Of Iterative Interventions To Increase Research Productivity In One Residency Program., Richard Alweis, Suzanne Wenderoth, Anthony A. Donato

Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Residency

BACKGROUND: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requires residency programs to expose residents to research opportunities.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a series of iterative interventions to increase scholarly activity in one internal medicine residency.

METHODS: Retrospective analysis of the effectiveness of a series of interventions to increase resident and faculty scholarly productivity over a 14-year period was performed using quality improvement methodology. Outcomes measured were accepted regional and national abstracts and PubMed indexed manuscripts of residents and faculty.

RESULTS: Initially, regional meeting abstracts increased and then were supplanted by national meeting …

Using Research And Roi To Drive Partnerships In Public Health Delivery Systems, Glen P. Mays Aug 2015

Using Research And Roi To Drive Partnerships In Public Health Delivery Systems, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Stimulating public-private partnerships (PPP) for health and economic development initiatives requires research that can answer key questions: (1) what are the health and economic returns likely to be realized; (2) over what time frames and with what certainty; (3) what investments are required to achieve results; and (4) what are the implementation strategies most likely to succeed. This presentation reviews ongoing research on the PPPs used to deliver public health services in the U.S., and explores the lessons this research offers PPPs in low and middle income countries. We examine how scientific evidence on public health delivery systems and their …

A Case Study Of The Impediments To The Commercialization Of Research At The University Of Kentucky, Nathan L. Vanderford, Elizabeth Marcinkowski Aug 2015

A Case Study Of The Impediments To The Commercialization Of Research At The University Of Kentucky, Nathan L. Vanderford, Elizabeth Marcinkowski

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

The commercialization of university-based research occurs to varying degrees between academic institutions. Previous studies have found that multiple barriers can impede the effectiveness and efficiency by which academic research is commercialized. This case study was designed to better understand the impediments to research commercialization at the University of Kentucky via a survey and interview with three successful academic entrepreneurs. The study also garnered insight from the individuals as to how the commercialization process could be improved. Issues with commercialization infrastructure; a lack of emphasis, at the university level, on the importance of research commercialization; a void in an entrepreneurial culture …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Developing the capacity to effectively carry out public health research is an integral part of health systems at both the national and global levels and strengthening research capacity is recognized as an approach to better health and development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Especially fields such as sexual and reproductive health (SRH) would require inter-disciplinary teams of researchers equipped with a range of methodologies to achieve this. In November 2013, as part of the International Family Planning Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a group of African researchers came together to discuss the gaps and strategies to improve sexual and …

Cost Estimation In Public Health Services & Systems Research, Glen P. Mays Jun 2015

Cost Estimation In Public Health Services & Systems Research, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Considerable uncertainty persists about the resources required to implement public health programs and policies, and about the factors that drive variation in resource needs and utilization across community and institutional settings. This paper reviews several alternative approaches to cost estimation that we have used in the field of public health services & systems research (PHSSR). This review was prepared for an expert panel meeting convened as part of a study commissioned by the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) to estimate the costs associated with public health emergency preparedness capabilities.

Librarian Actions To Develop And Sustain Human Research Subject Protection: A Pilot Global Study, Charles J. Greenberg, Sangeeta Narang Jun 2015

Librarian Actions To Develop And Sustain Human Research Subject Protection: A Pilot Global Study, Charles J. Greenberg, Sangeeta Narang

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Institutional Review Board (IRB), also known as an Independent Ethics Committee (IEC), is the most widely adopted process to insure human participant protection. The IRB system is overburdened as human research studies and human participation has dramatically increased without a corresponding increase in reviewing clinicians or ethics staff. Librarian involvement in the IRB process is evident but uneven and unstudied on an international scale. A literature review and international survey attempted to provide professional practice context and librarian reflection on the extent of their involvement, roles, and responsibilities in the IRB or IEC institutional process. Survey results reveal that …

Practice-Based Research Networks For Next-Generation Public Health, Glen P. Mays Mar 2015

Practice-Based Research Networks For Next-Generation Public Health, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

U.S. public health agencies face an existential imperative to transform their work from a collection of discrete programs and policies into a coherent enterprise for population-wide health improvement. Practice-based research networks (PBRNs) and the advancing science of public health delivery systems can help to achieve this transformation.

Perioperative Nurses’ Attitudes Toward The Electronic Health Record, Laura S. Yontz, Jennifer L. Zinn, Edward J. Schumacher

Health Care Administration Faculty Research

Background: The adoption of an electronic health record (EHR) is mandated under current health care legislation reform. The EHR provides data that are patient centered and improves patient safety. There are limited data; however, regarding the attitudes of perioperative nurses toward the use of the EHR.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to identify perioperative nurses’ attitudes toward the use of the EHR.

Design: Quantitative descriptive survey was used to determine attitudes toward the electronic health record.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Immersive Visualization (IV) eyewear on anxious, adult patients during oral debridement.

Methods: Thirty adult volunteers (n=23 females n=7 males) were enrolled in the study. Participants were required to be 18 years or older, exhibit at least moderate anxiety (score 9 or higher) on the Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale-Revised (DAS-R), and be generally healthy. Individuals were excluded from participation if they presented with severe dental calculus, periodontal disease, or dental caries, were taking psychotropic drugs, had a history of convulsive disorders, vertigo, or equilibrium disorders, or required antibiotic premedication. …
