BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection continues to potentially complicate an otherwise successful joint replacement. The treatment of this infection often requires multiple surgical procedures associated with increased complications and morbidity. This study examined the relationship between periprosthetic joint infection and mortality and aimed to determine the effect of periprosthetic joint infection on mortality and any predictors of mortality in patients with periprosthetic joint infection.

The purpose of this study was to determine the failure load and stiffness of various meniscal repair devices. A total of 61 fresh-frozen porcine menisci (medial and lateral) were used for the study. A 30-mm vertical, full-thickness tear was created and repaired using one of three all-inside fixation devices and one inside–out repair in the vertical mattress pattern. We used the MaxBraid (Biomet, Warsaw, IN) inside–out suture as a control. Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the most serious complications following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The demand for TKA is rapidly increasing, resulting in a subsequent increase in infections involving knee prosthesis. Despite the existence of common management practices, the best approach for several aspects in the management of periprosthetic knee infection remains controversial. Predictors Of Adherence To Home Rehabilitation Exercises Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Howard A. Tennen

Purpose/Objective

Although home exercises are commonly prescribed following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and are considered important in obtaining successful rehabilitation outcomes, little is known about factors associated with the completion of such exercises. Consequently, this study was designed to identify predictors of adherence to home rehabilitation exercises after ACL surgery.

Research Method/Design

Participants (33 women, 58 men) completed indices of athletic identity, neuroticism, optimism, and pessimism before ACL surgery and measures of daily pain, negative mood, stress, and home exercise completion for 42 days postoperatively.

Results

Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is thought to be an acquired osteochondral disorder, and its etiology may be multi-factorial. Trauma, both acute and repetitive events, has previously been proposed as a potential cause for OCD development. We present two cases of skeletally immature males who developed a symptomatic OCD lesion following a femoral condyle bone contusion. These cases suggest that an acute traumatic event may lead to the development of OCD of the knee.

Context: Noncontact anterior cruciate ligament injury has been reported to occur during the later stages of a game when fatigue is most likely present. Few researchers have focused on progressive changes in lower extremity biomechanics that occur throughout fatiguing.

Objective: To evaluate the effects of a sequential fatigue protocol on lower extremity biomechanics during a sidestep-cutting task (SS).

Design: Controlled laboratory study.

Setting: Laboratory.

Patients or Other Participants: Eighteen uninjured female collegiate soccer players (age 19.2 ± 0.9 years, height = 1.66 ± 0.5 m, mass 61.6 ± 5.1 kg) volunteered.

Objective: To compare the responsiveness of six common patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI). Design: A systematic search was conducted to identify reports of PROs following ACI. Study quality was evaluated using the modified Coleman Methodology Score (mCMS). For each outcome score, pre- to postoperative paired Hedge's g effect sizes were calculated with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Random effects meta-analyses were performed to provide a summary response for each PRO at time points (TP) I (<1 year), II (1 year to <2 years), III (2 years to <4 years), IV (>= 4 years), and overall.
