This was a 3-year retrospective cohort study of traumatic injuries in a midwestern pork meatpacking plant. Based on n = 5410 workers, this was a diverse workforce: Caucasian (56.6%), Hispanic (38.9%), African American (2.7%), Asian (1.1%) and Native American (0.8%). There were n = 1655 employees with traumatic injuries during this period. At 6 months of employment, the probability of injury was 33% in the harvest workers who were responsible for slaughter operations. The overall incidence injury rate was 22.76 per 100 full-time employees per year. Women experienced a higher incidence for injury than men. The risk ratio (RR) for …

Sparse data are available describing recent trends in the magnitude, clinical features, treatment practices, and outcomes of comparatively young adults hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The objectives of this population-based study were to describe 3 decade-long trends (1975 to 2005) in these end points in adults 1,703 residents of the Worcester (Massachusetts) metropolitan area 25 to 54 years of age who were hospitalized with initial AMIs at all central Massachusetts medical centers during 15 annual periods from 1975 through 2005. The purpose of this article is to describe the results of a clinical trial in which telephonic case management was evaluated as a supplement to substance abuse treatment. An interactive voice response system (IVR) was developed by the research team for use in the case management of randomly assigned participants in a clinical trial research project. The features of the software program facilitated a double caseload for the case manager as well as real-time data capture. At intake, no significant differences were found between participants in the telecommunication condition and the general project. Thus, the effectiveness of random assignment was …

BACKGROUND: The goal of these studies was to characterize the transcriptional network regulating changes in gene expression in the remnant liver of the rat after 70% partial hepatectomy (PHx) during the early phase response including the transition of hepatocytes from the quiescent (G0) state and the onset of the G1 phase of the cell cycle. RESULTS: The transcriptome of remnant livers was monitored at 1, 2, 4, and 6 hours after PHx using cDNA microarrays. The consumer empowerment movement has led to an increase in opportunities for people with psychiatric disabilities to take on roles in the development and delivery of mental health services. However, to date there has been less involvement of people with psychiatric disabilities in services research. In this paper, we describe our experiences creating employment opportunities for people with psychiatric disabilities in a university-based mental health services research center. Working with two local clubhouse programs we developed research assistant positions using both transitional and supported employment approaches. The signal recognition particle (SRP)-dependent targeting pathway facilitates rapid, efficient delivery of the ribosome-nascent chain complex (RNC) to the protein translocation channel. We test whether the SRP receptor (SR) locates a vacant protein translocation channel by interacting with the yeast Sec61 and Ssh1 translocons. Surprisingly, the slow growth and cotranslational translocation defects caused by deletion of the transmembrane (TM) span of yeast SRbeta (SRbeta-DeltaTM) are exaggerated when the SSH1 gene is disrupted. Disruption of the SBH2 gene, which encodes the beta subunit of the Ssh1p complex, likewise causes a growth defect when combined with SRbeta-DeltaTM. Cotranslational translocation defects in the …

BACKGROUND: The accessibility of tobacco for youth is difficult to measure, partly because of the varied sources of cigarettes. Perceptions about the accessibility of cigarettes assesses availability from all potential sources and has been found to predict future smoking. This study examines the determinants of perceived accessibility from the perspective of a longitudinal study. METHODS: Data were derived from the second Development and Assessment of Nicotine Dependence in Youth study, a 4-year longitudinal study of 1246 sixth-grade students who underwent up to 11 in-person interviews from 2002 to 2006.
