The Factors Causing High Food Insecurity Rates In U.S. Undergraduate Students, Natalie S. Byrd
Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research
The cliché of a college student surviving off ramen noodles sheds light on a deeper issue — high rates of food insecurity among undergraduate college/university students in the United States. There have been countless studies in recent years exploring the hidden causes of why an estimated 40% of students experience food insecurity as of 2022. These studies conclude three main reoccurring factors causing these high rates: costs, accessibility, and demographic characteristics. Food insecurity rates are important for higher education officials to address due to the countless physical and mental health, academic, and equity implications for the students.

Using A Mobile Food Pantry To Address The Food Insecurity Needs Of College Students, Madison Lapke, Barbara Stoecker, M. Craig Edwards, Janice Hermann
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Food insecurity is a prevalent issue throughout the United States, the state of Oklahoma, and on Oklahoma State University’s (OSU) Stillwater campus. Research has shown that college and university students tend to be more food insecure than national population averages and Stillwater’s food insecurity rates have been even higher. Mobile food pantries (MFP) generally have been effective in addressing food insecurity, but few studies have investigated their use to alleviate food insecurity among college students. Our Daily Bread Food and Resource Center (ODB) in Stillwater implemented an MFP on OSU’s campus. The present study surveyed students who utilized the MFP …

Anthós
In this study, students who lived in dorms around the lockdown period of Portland State University, March 2020—September 2021, were interviewed about their experience and how their houseplants affected their mental health. This was done via in-person interviews and an online focus group. Houseplants were found to support students’ mental health by encouraging a regular routine, providing opportunities for responsibility, adding aesthetic value, and serving as a general indicator of mental health. All of the participants recommended houseplants as a mental health support to their fellow students.

The Passive Approach: How Academically Motivated Students Approach Their Mental Health., Megan E. Mccoy
Anthós
The research utilizes qualitative interviews and focus groups to understand how academically motivated students approach their mental health. Mental health is defined as “emotional, psychological, and social well-being,” by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and is becoming a more significant concern in collegiate student populations. At Portland State University, the effects of mental health concerns on students are nearly double that of students around the U.S (Community Commons, n.d.). Academically motivated students are a group who seemingly strive for success and likely experience high levels of stress daily. The study found that students often take a passive approach …

Calling Attention To Campus Trends: Let’S Talk About Wellness, Mandy Magalhaes, Rachel Cullity
The Graduate Review
Abstract
This article explores the emerging focus on self-care and wellness amongst college students. In this article, the authors highlight the cultural shift from the “grind culture,” the complete and exhaustive dedication towards one’s work, to a focus on individual and community well being and how educational institutions are responding to students’ needs (Absher, 2020). Bridgewater State University's current response to student wellness is discussed, with a focus on the School of Social Work’s research efforts, programs and services being implemented, from the voices of graduate students. Self-care and wellness is an emerging conversation occurring in many professions and educational …

Covid-19 And Campus Life: Student Perspectives, Ryan Shah
Covid-19 And Campus Life: Student Perspectives, Ryan Shah
Osmosis Magazine
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented changes to campus life as students have adjusted to the hybrid class model and physical distancing framework. Simply residing on campus this semester has been a privilege; many Spiders, especially international students and students with pre-existing health conditions, could not come at all. Among students on campus, there are varying attitudes about how this semester of “Protecting Our Web” has gone. To document this historic semester, I interviewed three students in mid- October:
- Colin Sparkevicius, a senior from Pennsylvania majoring in business administration
- Tereza Hernandez, a sophomore from Virginia majoring in global studies
- Karthik …
Factors In The Probability Of Covid-19 Transmission In University Classrooms, Charles Connor
Factors In The Probability Of Covid-19 Transmission In University Classrooms, Charles Connor
Numeracy
University students and faculty members need an effective strategy to evaluate and reduce the probability that an individual will become infected with COVID-19 as a result of classroom interactions. Models are developed here that consider the probability an individual will become infected as a function of: prevalence of the disease in the university community, number of students in class, number of class meetings, and transmission rate in the classroom given the presence of an infected individual. Absolute probabilities that an individual will become infected in a classroom environment cannot be calculated because some of these factors have unknown values. Nevertheless, …

Kesmas

The Medicine Forum
A fifty year old male presents with a lesion on his right
hand. Approximately 2 months prior to presentation, the
patient, who is a dentist and avid boater, first noted the
lesion after hitting his hand when working in his boat’s
engine room. Initially he had a 1 cm erythematous
macular lesion on the dorsum of his right hand at the
5th metacarpal. He believed the lesion was present prior
to the time he struck his hand, and the injury brought it
to his attention.
