The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in the healing of experimentally created unicortical defect (UCD) of rat femurs. Twenty-four adult Wister rats were randomly divided into 2 groups: UCD and UCD+LLLT. The animals were subdivided into 3 groups (each group had 4 animals) and then they sacrificed at day 8, 15 and 22 for radiological, pathological and biochemical analysis. Bone healing was significantly different between the groups at day 15 and 22 (P < 0.05), while bone formation was significantly increased in the UCD+LLLT group at day 22 compared to the UCD group (P < 0.05). On histopathological examination, significant difference was found between the UCD and UCD+LLLT groups on the 22nd day (P < 0.05) while there was no difference on the 8th and 15th day. In the UCD group, the plasma Alkaline phosphatase activity decreased on the 15th and 22nd days, Calcium on the 15th day and Phosphorus on the 8th and 22nd days compared to the UCD+LLLT group. In addition, Glutathione levels, Plasma Catalase, Glutathione Peroxidase and Superoxide Dismutase activity significantly reduced in the UCD group compared with UCD+LLLT on the 8th, 15th and 22nd day (P < 0.05). In conclusion, LLLT applied at a dose of 904µm accelerates fracture healing in UCD of a rat’s femur. However, this effect shows an increase after the 22nd day of LLLT application.

Rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonensis) is a zoonotic nematode that causes rat lungworm disease (angiostrongyliasis), a potentially debilitating form of meningitis, in humans worldwide. The definitive hosts for rat lungworm are primarily members of the genus Rattus, with gastropods as intermediate hosts. This parasite has emerged as an important public health concern in the United States, especially in Hawaii, where the number of human cases has increased in the last decade. Here we discuss the current knowledge of the rat lungworm, including information on the life cycle and host species, as well as updates on known infection levels. Three …

Background/aim: Phenytoin is an anticonvulsant drug which causes fibroblast proliferation, collagen synthesis, and an increase in epidermal growth factor. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of phenytoin injection on the wound healing process in rats with vocal cord injury by histopathological methods. Materials and methods: The vocal cords of 10 albino Wistar rats were damaged bilaterally; the left vocal cord was kept as the control group. Phenytoin was injected in the right vocal cord. Ten rats were sacrificed. The thickness of the lamina propria and density of the fibroblast and collagen were evaluated histopathologically. Results: …

Background/aim: Based on our previous in vitro study with multilamellar liposomal bupivacaine (MLB) versus bupivacaine alone in artificial cerebrospinal fluid, we aimed to investigate in vivo antinociceptive effect of intrathecal MLB by determining tail flick latency (TFL) time after thermal stimulation in rats. Materials and methods: After preparing MLB and high-yield drug entrapment in liposome (HYDEL) bupivacaine, 18 female Wistar rats were assigned to 3 groups as control (bupivacaine) and study groups (MLB and HYDEL bupivacaine) including 6 rats in each group to administer these drugs intrathecally. Antinociceptive activity was determined in terms of TFL time after thermal stimulation. Maximum …
