Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common pathology characterized by degeneration of the articular cartilage. The aim of the research was to ask patients how they decided to make the injection, what treatments they received, their complaints prior to and after the injection and how they feel at the moment, and whether they are currently exercising or not. Thus, to demonstrate the patients' outcomes with their own expression. Materials and methods: A total of 92 knee OA patients completed semistructured interviews, which included six open-ended questions. Results: A total of 92 patients (66 female, 26 male) aged between 36 and …

Comparison Of Different Neuromuscular Facilitation Techniques And Conventionalphysiotherapy In Knee Osteoarthritis, Ayşenur Gökşen, Fi̇li̇z Can, Seval Yilmaz, Feza Korkusuz Jan 2021

Comparison Of Different Neuromuscular Facilitation Techniques And Conventionalphysiotherapy In Knee Osteoarthritis, Ayşenur Gökşen, Fi̇li̇z Can, Seval Yilmaz, Feza Korkusuz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: This study was conducted to compare the effects of conventional physiotherapy and two different `proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation' (PNF) techniques on knee muscle strength, knee muscular endurance, and proprioception in knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Materials and methods: The study included 35 patients between the ages of 47 and 62 who were diagnosed with stage 1-2 KOA. The patients were divided into three groups with block randomization method as Repeated Stretching Group (N = 12) With Repeated Stretching Technique, Combined Isotonic Contraction Group (N = 11) With Combined Isotonic Contractions (CIC) Technique, And Conventional Physiotherapy Group (n = 12). PNF was applied …

Clinical Evaluation Of Intra-Articular Platelet-Rich Plasma Injection For The Treatment Of Knee Osteoarthritis, Mohamed Y. Abuzeid, Osama G. Ahmed, Taher A. Eid

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate results of intra-articular injection of plasma sample rich in platelets for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Background OA is a progressive, chronic condition leading to pain and loss of function that reduce patients' quality of life. Materials and methods The study was performed on 30 knees of 30 patients with age 30–65 years. All of the patients presented with knee OA grade I, II, and III and were treated with two intra-articular platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections with three weeks interval. Preparation was done by centrifugation of 50 ml blood in …

Application Of Platelet-Rich Plasma Preparation Rich In Growth Factors In Knee Osteoarthritis, Laila M. Montasera, Marwa K. Mesregah, Mohamed A. Helwa, Taher A. Eid

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective The aim of this study was to determine the regenerative properties of intra-articular injections of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in improving knee osteoarthritic patients and to determine the correlation of platelet count and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) with clinical improvement. Background Platelets have an important role in primary as well as secondary hemostasis; however, its regenerative capability is not widely studied. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a cartilage degenerative process. No treatment is available to improve this process. Patients and methods The study was conducted on 28 patients suffering from primary knee OA grades II and III injected with PRP preparation …

The Genicular Nerve: Radiofrequency Lesion Application For Chronic Knee Pain, Paki̇ze Kirdemi̇r, Serdar Çatav, Fi̇li̇z Alkaya Solmaz Jan 2017

The Genicular Nerve: Radiofrequency Lesion Application For Chronic Knee Pain, Paki̇ze Kirdemi̇r, Serdar Çatav, Fi̇li̇z Alkaya Solmaz

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: We investigated the short- and medium-term effectiveness of genicular nerve radiofrequency (RF) applied in patients with chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis. Materials and methods: Radiofrequency was performed in 49 patients with a diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis. VAS and WOMAC were measured at baseline and at 1, 4, and 12 weeks postprocedure. Under fluoroscopic guidance, the cannula was advanced percutaneously towards the area connecting the shaft to the epicondyle. The RF electrode was inserted through the cannula and the electrode tip temperature was raised to 80 °C for 90 s. One RF lesion was made for each genicular nerve. …

Quality Of Life In Patients With Primary Knee Osteoarthritis, Aml A. Salama, Heba G. Esaily, Samer A. Bolty, Taher E. Abd Elstaar

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objectives The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life (QoL) in patients with primary knee osteoarthritis (OA). Background OA is the most common degenerative joint disorder and a major public health problem worldwide. OA of the knee is a major cause of mobility impairment, which has an unpredictable and negative impact on health and QoL. Patients and methods This was a cross-sectional analytical study involving 116 patients with primary knee OA, who were admitted to the outpatient clinic of rheumatology and orthopedics in Menoufia University Hospital during the period of the study. Patients were included if …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The aim of this study was to compare the frequencies of surgical interventions between patients receiving intraarticular hyaluronic acid (IAHA) injection and those receiving only oral antiinflammatory drug treatment at the end of a 1-year follow-up period. Materials and methods: A total of 705 patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis (OA) between 2007 and 2009 were included in this study. Their records were investigated retrospectively. We divided 218 of the patients into 3 groups according to the Kellgren–Lawrence criteria, and they received sodium hyaluronate once a week for 3 weeks. Another 487 patients with gonarthrosis served as group 2 and were …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a slowly evolving articular disease that appears to originate in the cartilage and affects the underlying bone, soft tissues, and synovial fluid. This condition usually occurs late in life, principally affecting the large weight-bearing joints such as the knee. It is particularly disabling when the knees are affected, because it limits the ability to walk, to rise from a chair, and to use stairs. The treatment selections for OA knees include analgesic drugs, physiotherapy, intra-articular (IA) drug administration, and surgical total knee replacement. We chose IA hyaluronic acid injection as the treatment method as it was documented as …
