Sars-Cov-2 Infection Complicated By Acute Pericarditis Concurrent With Malaria Infection, Kevin Hocin, Yudha Kusuma, Atit Puspitasari Dewi

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia

Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) can present as various symptoms, which range from asymptomatic to severe symptoms. We report a case of COVID-19 female patient with malaria co-infection who developed pericarditis complication. In this pandemic era, it is mandatory to rule out COVID-19. Coinfection with malaria will result in higher cytokine levels which lead to atypical complication, such as pericarditis. Prompt identification of atypical COVID-19 complications is essential as it can lower the mortality rate and reduce the duration of hospitalization.

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Background: Increased malaria caseload is a public health threat to malaria elimination in Southern Thailand. Yala Province has the second highest malaria caseload in the country. Cross-border migration may be an underlying reason for the malaria outbreaks in Yala. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to assess the malaria knowledge, prevention practices, and insecticidetreated net (ITN) ownership and use among migrants in four malaria transmission districts of Yala Province. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey with two-stage cluster sampling recruiting 414 migrants. We identified migrants’ locations with the help of key informants. Migrants aged 18 years and older were interviewed …

Preparation And Standardisation Of Plasmodium Falciparum Nosode, Rajesh Shah

Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy

Background: Malaria officinalis, a Homoeopathic preparation used against malaria, was prepared from decomposed vegetable matter from a marshy area by G. W. Bowen in 1862. No scientific published material is available on the source of any malaria-related nosode. There is a need to develop the new nosode using the organisms. The author has developed the nosode from Plasmodium falciparum parasites, and the detailed method of preparation is described in this manuscript. Objective: Preparation and standardisation of Homoeopathic nosode prepared from P. falciparum parasites, which could be explored for further research and therapeutic efficacy. Materials and Methods: The most widely cultivated …

Infection Of Plasmodium Knowlesi Malaria In Human, I Gede Yasa Asmara Dec 2018

Infection Of Plasmodium Knowlesi Malaria In Human, I Gede Yasa Asmara

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia

Plasmodium knowlesi (P. knowlesi) has been recognised as the fifth of malaria infections in human after P. vivax, P. falciparum, P. malariae and P. ovale. Epidemiology and clinical features of the disease have much been discussed only in several literatures since the incidence increased in Kapit Division, Sarawak, Malaysia in 2004. A large-scale research investigating real incidence of the infection in South East Asia is important. Because of rapid life cycle, the number of parasite in the blood can increase significantly, result in potential severe malaria. Pathophysiology aspect of the disease has not been clear yet, particularly on how severe …

The Battle Against Malaria: A Teachable Moment, Randy K. Schwartz Feb 2017

The Battle Against Malaria: A Teachable Moment, Randy K. Schwartz

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Malaria has been humanity’s worst public health problem throughout recorded history. Mathematical methods are needed to understand which factors are relevant to the disease and to develop counter-measures against it. This article and the accompanying exercises provide examples of those methods for use in lower- or upper-level courses dealing with probability, statistics, or population modeling. These can be used to illustrate such concepts as correlation, causation, conditional probability, and independence. The article explains how the apparent link between sickle cell trait and resistance to malaria was first verified in Uganda using the chi-squared probability distribution. It goes on to explain …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Malaria is a major public health problem, especially in the Southeast Asia region, caused by 5 species of Plasmodium (P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. knowlesi). The aim of this study was to compare parasite species identification methods using the new multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) against nested PCR and microscopy. Materials and methods: Blood samples on filter papers were subject to conventional PCR methods using primers designed by us in multiplex PCR and previously designed primers of nested PCR. Both sets of results were compared with microscopic identification. Results: Of the 129 samples identified …

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Problem/background : Allele-specific amplification is an important tool for a largescale study of geographic distribution of pathogens harboringpolymorphic genes. In this study, we have developed a simplemethod to differentiate strains of Plasmodium falciparum basedon polymorphic block 2 located at the 5’ portion of the merozoitesurface protein-1 gene (PfMsp-1). Block 2 of PfMsp-1, a strongcandidate for asexual blood-stage vaccine, contains 3 basicsequence types with MAD20 type, K1 type and RO33 type asrepresentative alleles. Objective : To develop a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method capableof detecting PfMsp-1 genotypes.Design : Experimental study.Setting : Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, ChulalongkornUniversity.Materials and Methods : The …
