Since less attention has been paid to the effect of passing blood pressure states on the survival of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, this study aimed to inves­tigate the survival of PD patients with and without hypertension, estimate the probability of hypertension and determine the influential factors. In this retro­spective cohort study, the data of 700 patients visiting dialysis centers from all provinces of Iran from 1997-2009 were analyzed. For data analysis, the multistate survival model was used. The median survival time (months) and five-year survival were 75% and 56%, respectively. While there are no guidelines for management of such patients, aggressive blood pressure treatment, including the use of intravenous antihypertensives, is often undertaken. While evidence of benefit is lacking, emerging data suggest that treatment of asymptomatic hypertension in the inpatient setting is associated with adverse outcomes, including acute kidney injury and ischemic stroke. BACKGROUND: The investigators aim to determine the frequency of systemic medications in patients with oral lichen planus or oral lichenoid lesions. METHODS: A retrospective study of lichenoid diagnoses in the New York University College of Dentistry Oral Medicine Clinic. Data obtained included patient demographics, prescription medications and pathologic diagnosis. Comparative analysis was performed. RESULTS: A total of 162 oral lichenoid lesion/oral lichen planus patients were identified: The most frequently found medications were anti-hypertensives, anti-hyperlipidemics followed by metformin, proton pump inhibitors and levothyroxine. CONCLUSION: The findings emphasize the importance of clinicians’ awareness of potential oral adverse reactions from certain medications.

Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) is an evidence-based method for confirming diagnosis and monitoring hypertension over time. Some studies have found that HBPM may lead to clinically relevant reductions in blood pressure when combined with additional interventions, but few studies have focused specifically on African American populations. This study explored awareness, beliefs and health-seeking behaviour relating to diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases in Ingwavuma, a poor rural community in the uMkhanyakude district of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. To evaluate the impact of protocol training by a medical school and public health department on nurses’ perceptions to deliver care to patients with hypertension and diabetes.

Training was delivered using the Georgia Diabetes and Hypertension Nurse protocols for public health nurses. A survey was developed and distributed post training to participants. The training included lectures, workshops, case discussions, simulation, and physical examination practice on standardized patients. Participants were asked about perceptions, both before and after training completion regarding frequency in changing practice and confidence in treating hypertension and diabetes for six items.
