Empowering Children And Families With Food Allergies: An Innovative Role For Occupational Therapy, Salma H. Bachelani, Meredith P. Gronski, Kelly A. Carlson
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Food allergies (FAs) have far-reaching implications regarding occupational participation. Children with food allergies and their families experience impacts on their daily life activities. The current standard of care for FAs fails to adequately address the wide-ranging barriers to participation in home, school, and community environments. This study used a mixed-method design to examine the impacts of FA on the needs of children and families affected by FA. Eighteen parents of children with FAs and six health care providers of children with FAs were interviewed; the parents also completed two questionnaires to identify the level of impact of FA on areas …

Abstract: Food allergies (FA) are a growing problem in the pediatric population and clinical features differ according to the underlying immunological mechanisms. While the primary management strategy is to eliminate the culprit food from the diet, assessment of the potential nutritional risks of elimination is also an integral part of management. In cases that do not improve over time; if you have basic food allergies and multiple food allergies, this can also lead to negative nutritional consequences. The contribution of basic nutrients, economical and easily accessible foods to the diet, is critical and has an important place in meeting the …
An Investigation Of Healthcare Supports For Those With Food Allergy In Ireland, Joseph Bolger, Nicola Blake, Sneha Vinod
An Investigation Of Healthcare Supports For Those With Food Allergy In Ireland, Joseph Bolger, Nicola Blake, Sneha Vinod
International Undergraduate Journal of Health Sciences
Introduction: In Ireland, around 5% of children and 3% adults have food allergy (134,000 people). This current paper describes a survey that was carried out on a subset of service-users with the aim of identifying whether there is a need for increased specialist medical services and/or for a funded charity such as Anaphylaxis Ireland, defunct since 2015.
Materials & Methods: These needs were assessed via an online survey using Google Forms. The survey was conducted from 17-27th February 2020. There were 31 questions in total, relating to topics such as symptoms, clinical wait times, satisfaction with care provided and demand …

What Plays A Role In The Severity Of Atopic Dermatitis In Children?, Murat Cansever, Çi̇ğdem Oruç
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Determining the characteristics and risk factors of severe disease is extremely important to combat atopic dermatitis (AD), which has recently shown increasing prevalence. In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with AD and identifying the factors associated with the severity of the disease. Materials and methods: A total of 304 pediatric patients diagnosed with atopic dermatitis were included in the study. The patients' age at admission, age at onset of symptoms, the presence of atopy history in their family, eosinophil levels obtained from blood counts were recorded, together with the data of cigarette …

Background/aim: Filaggrin is a protein complex involved in epidermal differentiation and skin barrier formation. Mutations of the filaggrin gene (FLG) are associated with allergen sensitization and allergic diseases like atopic dermatitis (AD), allergic rhinitis, food allergy (FA), and asthma. The aim of the study is to reveal the frequency of change in the FLG gene and determine the association between FLG loss-of-function (LOF) mutations and FA and/or AD in Turkish children. Materials and methods: Four FLG loss-of-function (LOF) mutations known to be common in European populations were analyzed in 128 healthy children, 405 food-allergic children with or without atopic dermatitis, …
Immunotherapy For Food Allergy: Myth Or Reality?, Gatot Soegiarto
Immunotherapy For Food Allergy: Myth Or Reality?, Gatot Soegiarto
Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia
Allergic reaction to food can have serious consequences. The only treatment option is strict allergen avoidance, but accidental ingestions happen frequently and can lead to severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reactions. Food allergy is one of the most common causes of anaphylactic reactions. Therefore self-injectable epinephrine should always be at hand in case of accidental exposure. Many food allergies may resolve over time, but most patients with persistent food allergies live with fear of anaphylactic reactions. Within the last several years, the usefulness of immunotherapy for food allergies has been investigated. Several food immunotherapies are being developed; which include oral, …

The results of the evaluation of the frequency and risk factors of developing food allergies, particularly its etiological structure and immunological characteristics in children of HELL, which has several pharmacologically stable chronic diseases are presented in the article. Food allergy was detected in 65% of children. Etiological structure of food sensitiveness has its own characteristics in accordance with the nosology of the disease. Children with atypical signs of disease show a combination of pathogenic mechanisms of development of food allergy

Purpose: Many youth struggle with the physical, mental, and social burdens of food allergy. The exact cause of food allergies is unknown, but several theories exist such as the “couch potato theory”, “hygiene hypothesis”, “microflora theory”, and “alarmins” theory. This non-systematic literature review summarizes the problem of youth food allergy and provides guidance to allied health professionals.
Method: A literature search of the relevant literature from years 2000 through 2017 was conducted using PubMed with the key words “food allergy”, “youth”, and “management”.
Results: Youth with food allergy may experience anxiety, social isolation, bullying, and depression, in addition to life-threatening …
