Chronic pain is a common condition in which sufferers experience pain for over 3 months. The causes of chronic pain are often difficult to discern, as many cases are not associated with physical damage. A predictive processing (PP) perspective proposes that chronic pain results from the brain’s erroneous predictions derived from strong emotional and/or fearful reactions to pain. Individuals with anxiety disorders are more likely to react with fear to general stimuli, and therefore may be more likely to develop chronic pain under this model. In 2022, American lobster (Homarus americanus) and softshell clam (Mya arenaria) harvests contributed $283 million to Downeast Maine’s economy, employing thousands of harvesters. Harvesting is grueling work. Pain from work-related injuries precedes most opioid deaths, and workers in fisheries are disproportionately at risk. Harvesters are typically self-employed and often uninsured or underinsured, complicating access to care. Patients with various aetiology of pain who underwent erector spinae plane block at different levels were evaluated at the tertiary Algology clinic. Visual analog scale (VAS) values were recorded before the block; 30 min, two weeks, and two months after the block. Medical records of fifteen patients have been obtained. The average VAS decreased from 7 ± 1 to 5 ± 3 in the second month when compared to the values before block (p < 0.01). ESP block can be an option for chronic pain in postsurgical pain syndrome and myofascial pain management.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (“dry eye”) is a common (14%–30% of adults over age 48) though difficult to treat condition that causes both discomfort and disability with associated dryness, pain, and visual disturbances. Etiology is not clearly understood but is likely varied, with a subset of patients suffering from chronic neuropathic pain referred to as “burning eye syndrome.” This review of existing literature summarizes the clinical presentation, natural history, pathophysiology, and treatment modalities of burning eye syndrome.

Background/aim: We investigated the short- and medium-term effectiveness of genicular nerve radiofrequency (RF) applied in patients with chronic knee pain due to osteoarthritis. Materials and methods: Radiofrequency was performed in 49 patients with a diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis. VAS and WOMAC were measured at baseline and at 1, 4, and 12 weeks postprocedure. Under fluoroscopic guidance, the cannula was advanced percutaneously towards the area connecting the shaft to the epicondyle. Socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals are at-risk for chronic pain and disparate care. In this qualitative study, we explored providers’ experiences with socioeconomically disadvantaged patients, with a particular focus on providers’: (1) perceptions of socioeconomically disadvantaged patients’ barriers to pain care, (2) attitudes towards this patient population, and (3) chronic pain decisions for these patients. Individual interviews were conducted with twenty-four healthcare providers. Providers discussed several patient-level access barriers, such as not having health insurance, financial constraints, and scheduling difficulties. Providers believed socioeconomically disadvantaged patients were at-risk to misuse prescription opioids and were less comfortable prescribing opioids to these patients. This investigation …
