Engaging In Research: Reflections From Summer Undergraduate Research Assistants, Elyse Sumarsono, Julia Raugh
Wisdom & Compassion: The LUSON Journal
The aim of the journal was to organize the reflections of two undergraduate nursing students regarding the journey of navigating through summer research along with faculty. Through this reflective experience, research assistants were able to identify many benefits that come with participating in the research conduction process that should encourage other undergraduate students to involve themselves in future research. Research assistants were challenged to take on new and unknown tasks in a high-level research study, which ultimately enhanced skills for future academic success and professional careers as nurses.

Feasibility Of Incorporating The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training Program Into Nursing Education, Athena Liu
Undergraduate Research
Suicide and mental health are both relevant topics that impact a diverse number of individuals in both personal and professional contexts, such as patients in healthcare. Therefore, it is important that healthcare workers, such as nurses, are trained and well equipped to intervene with at-risk individuals. The objective of this study is to determine the feasibility of offering Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary, and to measure the …
Nursing Innovation: Improved Perioperative Care With A Redesigned Urological Drape, Olivia Sonneborn, Indra Jolayemi
Nursing Innovation: Improved Perioperative Care With A Redesigned Urological Drape, Olivia Sonneborn, Indra Jolayemi
Journal of Perioperative Nursing
Inventions and innovations have the potential to change lives.1 Perioperative nurses strive for improved patient care2 and are well positioned to develop creative and innovative solutions to clinical challenges faced when caring for patients in the perioperative environment. Fluid leakage during percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) surgery poses risks to both patients3 and staff. The PCNL drape was developed by a collaborative perioperative team to reduce these risks and improve the quality of care provided to patients.

Improving Communication Access With Deaf People Through Nursing Simulation: A Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration, Jamie L. Mccartney Ph.D., Tracy Gidden, Jennifer Biggs, Kathy Geething, Karl Kosko Ph.D.
Journal of Gender, Ethnic, and Cross-Cultural Studies
Baccalaureate nursing and sign language interpreting students participated in a pediatric discharge simulation with a deaf person playing the role of the baby’s parent. At the conclusion of the simulation, participants were emailed a consent letter and a link to a 17-item questionnaire developed by the authors. Responses were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively, whereby nonparametric statistics were calculated to examine Likert-scale items. A Mann-Whitney test statistic was calculated, instead of an independent samples t-test, given the smaller sample in the current study (n = 26). A question was posed to participants that evaluated their self-perception of the effectiveness of …

Patient Experience Journal
Hospital administrators and researchers often use large, standardized surveys that examine patient satisfaction to evaluate whether interventions improve patient experience. To summarize the breadth of these interventions and how large, standardized surveys are used to evaluate them, a multidisciplinary research team conducted a review. They used PubMed and Google Scholar searches, reviews of reference lists and targeted searches to locate studies. They evaluated one hundred and twenty-four articles and fifty-eight articles met the inclusion criteria for the narrative review. Using the standard methodology for narrative reviews, the authors synthesize salient themes in the articles and highlight exemplar studies. The review …

Narrative Medicine: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Address Burnout Among The Nursing Workforce, Kimberly D. Perris, Eden J. Donahue, Adrian Matt Zytkoskee, Janelle Adsit
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
Healthcare providers (HCPs) experience unprecedented burnout. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare workforce was pushed beyond its capacity, driving some out of the field, leaving hospitals and healthcare agencies to face unrelenting demand for care. Limited staff and resources challenged organizations to redesign infrastructure and processes to meet COVID-19 safety guidelines while balancing the priorities of finance and people.
Two years into the pandemic, the signs of burnout among nurses in an RN-BSN program surfaced, which paralleled the bitter resentment happening across the nursing profession. Nurses working on the front lines reported feelings of abandonment, lack of resources, staffing shortages, …
