Myxoid Liposarcoma: A Soft-Tissue Sarcoma Mimicking Hematoma In A Baseball Player, Chia-Hua Lee, Hao-Hung Tsai, Yat-Yin Law, Chuan-Chao Lin

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

There are multiple histological types of soft-tissue sarcomas (STS) that are associated with different prognoses. Liposarcoma (LPS) is the most frequent subtype of STS in extremities and trunk wall in Taiwan. The myxoid liposarcoma is the second most common subtype of LPS and is associated with an intermediate-grade malignancy. STS and hematoma may be difficult to differentiate clinically. We report a case of a 35-year-old male presented with a mass lesion over the left thigh, which was initially misinterpreted as a hematoma on ultrasound. We also conducted a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study, which revealed the possible diagnosis of STS. After …

Periarticular Dextrose Prolotherapy For Patients With Primary Knee Osteoarthritis: A Casereport And Literature Reviewarticle, Yen-Jou Ho, Yao-Jen Chen, Chi-Chung Ho, Sheng-Wei Zeng, Su-Ju Tsai, Long-Wei Dai Dec 2021

Periarticular Dextrose Prolotherapy For Patients With Primary Knee Osteoarthritis: A Casereport And Literature Reviewarticle, Yen-Jou Ho, Yao-Jen Chen, Chi-Chung Ho, Sheng-Wei Zeng, Su-Ju Tsai, Long-Wei Dai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease that primarily afflicts older adults. The mainstream management of knee OA involves integrative practice, including patient education, weight reduction, exercise, pharmacological therapy, and non-pharmacological modalities. However, prolotherapy with hypertonic dextrose via either intra-articular or periarticular injection, or a combination of both techniques, has become a strong evidence-based treatment or adjuvant therapy that may be used in addition to conservative management. In the literature, two studies have compared the effects of intra-articular and periarticular prolotherapy for knee OA and reveal comparable effects. In addition, the periarticular approach has fewer side effects and post-injection pain. …

Role Of Ultrasound-Guided Injection Of Corticosteroids And Platelet-Rich Plasma In Treatment Of Supraspinatus Tendon Injuries, Doaa Hosny, Eman A. Abdallah, Mohamed K. Abd-Elmageed, Mohamed R. Elkholy

Menoufia Medical Journal

Background The shoulder is the site of multiple injuries and inflammatory conditions that lend themselves to therapeutic injection. Therapeutic subacromial injection should be considered after other conservative interventions have been tried. Studies have demonstrated that needle placement is more accurate with image guidance, usually ultrasound (US). Objectives To highlight the role of US-guided injection in the treatment of supraspinatus tendon injuries. Patients and methods This study included 60 patients diagnosed as having supraspinatus tendinosis only or with associated partial thickness tear. All patients were injected under US guidance. A total of 40 patients were injected with corticosteroids, whereas the other …

Single Running Bout Achilles Tendon Stiffness Adaptations In Elite Male Runners With Various Foot Strike Patterns, Joshua Sponbeck, Iain Hunter, Luke Brogan, Zachary Ludwig, Collette Batty, Wayne Johnson

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

PURPOSE: Midfoot strike runners experience greater amounts of force through the Achilles Tendon while running compared with heel strike runners which may increase the risk of Achilles tendinopathy. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of a five-mile running bout, on Achilles tendon stiffness as measured by elastography in elite male runners that exhibit a midfoot or heel strike pattern. METHODS: Ten male runners (age = 21.4 years, height = 179.54 cm, weight = 66.2 kg, average miles run over the last 6 weeks = 6) participated in this study. Runners free from injury and running …

Use Of Ultrasound-Guided Platelet-Rich Plasma In The Treatment Of Carpometacarpal Osteoarthritis, Manuel Britto, Siraaj Dawood, Siyang Lu, Martin Canillas

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and can severely affect function and quality of life. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is derived from a patient’s own blood and has potential as an adjunct to treat OA. However, research has been limited for small joints such as the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint.

Clinical Findings

A 65-year-old Caucasian male complained of bilateral wrist and neck pain after a motor vehicle accident. His initial exam noted swelling, tenderness and pain with movement at the bilateral thumb CMC joints and anatomic snuffboxes. However, there was no strength, range of motion or tactile deficits …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

CASE HISTORY: A 25-year-old professional volleyball player, who was playing in a game in Iceland, was transitioning off the net back-pedaling and pivoting as she felt something pop in her right calf. Initially, the athlete denied having any pain but was unable to plantarflex her foot or weight bear. At the time of injury, she was taking Sertraline (HCL 50 mg), Trazodone (50 mg), Wellbutrin XL (Bupropion HCL) 150 mg, Adderall (5mg) and birth control. PHYSICAL EXAM: The athlete was evaluated at an emergency room, where a Thompson squeeze test was performed and determined positive for an acute Achilles tendon …

Manual Versus Semi-Automated Detection Of Muscle Fascicle Pennation Angle Of The Vastus Lateralis, Natalie Walker, Jesus Hernandez-Sarabia, Carlos Estrada, Jocarlo Shields, Rob Maclennan, Jason Defreitas, Scott Crawford, Micheal Luera

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Muscle pennation angle (PA) is a key characteristic in muscle function. However, current methodologies are tedious, time consuming, and usually only include a few representative fascicles for the PA measures. Leveraging image processing methods could improve the efficiency of PA measurements while still providing valuable insight into architectural changes during specific tasks. PURPOSE: To compare manual (MAN) versus semi-automated (SA) analyses for muscle PA within the vastus lateralis (VL) utilizing ultrasound images taken during isometric knee extensions at different intensities relative to maximum volitional effort. METHODS: Sixteen lower-body resistance trained males (n =7, mean ± SD; 21±7 yrs; 77.7 ± …
