Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Abstract

Introduction: Delayed diagnosis of pediatric hearing loss can cause delays in cognitive and social development. This study described the sociodemographic factors associated with delayed timing of a final hearing diagnosis after an abnormal newborn hearing screening (NBHS). Methods: Parent-infant dyads were recruited after being referred for further audiologic testing on an abnormal result from the NBHS. Results: Of the 53 participants, 55% (n=29) did not receive a final diagnosis by the recommended 3 months of age. Of those with a delayed diagnosis, 45% (n=13) had their first appointment within 3 months, but a delay was caused by an inconclusive …

A Systematic Review And Analysis Of Racial Differences In Treatment For Depression, Elli D. R. Parisi Jun 2019

A Systematic Review And Analysis Of Racial Differences In Treatment For Depression, Elli D. R. Parisi

DePaul Discoveries

Mental health affects a large proportion of the population across the world. Though many mental health studies exist, they are inconsistent in methodology, conceptualization of terms, and populations studied; as a result, many studies are incomparable with each other. Further, there is arguably too few studies that focus on marginalized or underrepresented populations. The current study aims to address some of this gap in knowledge. The differences in the way depression is diagnosed and treated in various racial and ethnic groups were identified, and the findings of previous studies were analyzed to help improve the way mental health, and specifically …

Diabetic Gastroparesis: Perspectives From A Patient And Health Care Providers, Adam D. Farmer, Caroline E. Bruckner-Holt, Susanne Schwartz, Emma Sadler, Sri Kadirkamanthan

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Gastroparesis is defined as a delay in gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction in the stomach. Gastroparesis has a number of causes, including postsurgical, secondary to medications, postinfectious, idiopathic, and as a complication of diabetes mellitus, where it is underrecognized. The cardinal symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis are nausea, early satiety, bloating, and vomiting. Diabetic gastroparesis is more common in females and has a cumulative incidence of 5% in type 1 diabetes and 1% in type 2 diabetes. It is associated with a reduction in quality of life and exerts a significant burden on health care resources. The pathophysiology …

The Role Of Mri In The Differentiation Between Benign And Malignant Ovarian Lesions, Adel M. El-Wekil, Mohammad S. Abdullah, Sara S. El-Kholy

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective To determine whether conventional MRI and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) could help accurately in distinguishing benign from malignant adnexal masses. Background Characterization of ovarian lesions is of great importance in order to plan adequate therapeutic procedures. Ovarian neoplasms may be benign, borderline, or malignant. Using an imaging-guided approach based on their morphological appearance, we classified adnexal masses into three main groups: cystic, solid and complex cystic and solid. We also used DWI as an advanced magnetic resonance technique to achieve more accuracy of diagnosis. Materials and methods Thirty patients with initial undetermined ovarian lesions underwent pelvic MRI on 1.5-T magnet …

Adherence To Egyptian Pediatric Acute Otitis Media Guideline In Egypt, Ahmed Ragab, Alaa A. A. El-Sweedy, Hala M. Elmoselhy Shaheen, Nagwa N. Hegazy

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective The aim of this study was to assess the adherence of different specialties (family physicians, pediatricians, and otolaryngologists) to Egyptian clinical practice guideline dealing with pediatric acute otitis media (AOM) in Egypt. Background Egyptian clinical practice guideline for AOM has been promoted as a strategy to measure and improve the quality of patient care. However, more efforts have been expended on creating guidelines than implementing them. Patients and methods It was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Participants from different specialties, such as family physicians, pediatricians, and otolaryngologists were selected by systematic random techniques from the list of participants in the …

Timely Identification Of Atypical Acute Aortic Dissection In The Emergency Department:A Study From A Tertiary Hospital, Youjin Jiang, Zhengfang Zhang, Zhiming Gu, Hengdi Zou, Wenhui Fan, Xiaojun Chen, Hongyou Wang

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a rare but fatal disease if left untreated. Symptoms are often similar to common conditions; therefore, the diagnostic strategy is important. We aimed to identify the atypical symptoms in a timely manner without putting patients at greater risk for undetected AAD.Materials and methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study of 59 AAD patients with both atypical and typical symptoms from January 2012 to December 2016. Patients with atypical symptoms continuing more than 30 min underwent a D-dimer test and computed tomography (CT) or computed tomographic angiography (CTA).Results: Of the 59 AAD patients, 22 were …

Reviewing The Diagnostic Classifications Used For Low Back Pain In Physiotherapy-Related Research., Steve Milanese, David Worth Jan 2019

Reviewing The Diagnostic Classifications Used For Low Back Pain In Physiotherapy-Related Research., Steve Milanese, David Worth

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Background: The evidence-to-practice gap, where clinical practice does not reflect the findings from research evidence, has been identified as a concern in allied health disciplines such as physiotherapy. Failure to provide care according to current (research) evidence raises the potential that patients are receiving care that is either not needed, is ineffective, less effective than current research indicates, or potentially harmful. For research evidence to be translatable to clinical practice, the research should be seen to be applicable, i.e. the clinician should be able to recognise that the research study sample reflects their patient population. Method: This study presents …

Comparative Detection Of Bovine Herpesvirus-1 Using Antigen Elisa, Immunohistochemistry And Immunofluorescence Methods In Cattle With Pneumonia, Seli̇m Çomakli, Yavuz Seli̇m Sağlam, Mehmet Özkan Ti̇murkan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to detect the prevalence and presence of bovine herpesvirus-1 (BoHV-1) using immunohistochemistry (IHC), immunofluorescence (IF) and antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the lung samples of cattle (n = 1023). In addition, three methods were compared using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and chi-square test ($χ^{2}$ test), and their usability were evaluated in laboratory conditions. Macroscopically, pneumonia was seen in 120 of the lung tissue samples (11.73%). Based on the microscopic examinations, the pneumonia types were classified as catarrhal-suppurative bronchopneumonia (6.7%), fibrinous bronchopneumonia (5%), interstitial pneumonia (84.1%), and granulomatous pneumonia (4.2%). The IHC, IF and antigen ELISA …

Serodiagnostic Potential Of Brucella Outer Membrane And Periplasmic Proteins, Aitbay Bulashev, Orken Akibekov, Zhanbolat Suranshiyev, Bakytkali Ingirbay, Saule Eskendirova

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to evaluate the serological diagnostic potential of the Brucella recombinant outer membrane (rOMP25, rOMP31) and periplasmic proteins (rBP26, rSOD) in a comparative way using an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (i-ELISA). Rabbit and/or mouse antibodies to Brucella whole cell and/or soluble protein preparations recognized all recombinant proteins used, which confirms the expression of target antigens in E. coli in active form. The recombinant proteins showed different antigenicity to antibodies of cattle kept on a brucellosis-affected (endemic) farm and/or a new focus of infection. Thus, the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies was confirmed by i-ELISA/rSOD in 79% …

In Silico Design And In Vitro Development Of A Highly Accurate Test To Detect Brucella Species, Hosein Safari, Setareh Shahnazari, Maysam Mard-Soltani, Somayeh Tavakoli, Bahman Khalesi

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background: Conventionalmethods of detecting Brucella spp. suffer from technical and biological complications. Besides, newly characterized species of the genus Brucella could be neglected by previously designed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. Therefore, a more accurate PCR-based test seems to be imminently needed. Materials and methods: Blood samples were collected from 39 patients diagnosed with brucellosis and 25 healthy controls. Multiple sequence alignments (MSA) were performed on 500 Omp2-related protein and gene sequences. Thereafter, specific primers were designed and synthesized for the regions with highest conservancy. The collected samples were assessed by PCR test. To overcome the cross-reactivity issue, PCR thermal …
