Efficaciousness Of Mindfulness Interventions For Trauma Using Psychophysiological Measures: A Review, Sherief Y. Eldeeb Sep 2018

Efficaciousness Of Mindfulness Interventions For Trauma Using Psychophysiological Measures: A Review, Sherief Y. Eldeeb

Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)

In recent decades the efficaciousness of mindfulness has been proven in a wide variety of contexts, but some crucial populations remain understudied. This review critically examines the literature on mindfulness in individuals with trauma using psychophysiological measures. Psychophysiological measures offer critical insight into this intersection of mindfulness and trauma due to the known somatic components in each, as well as serving as an objective response. Mindfulness-based treatments seem to show great promise in treating trauma, however there are significant limitations in the literature. Future studies should standardize the minimum length of treatment, utilize gender-balanced and ethnically diverse samples, and introduce …

Endovascular Repair Of Traumatic Subclavian Artery Pseudoaneurysm: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Mohamad M. Gouda, Mohamad Taha Aug 2018

Endovascular Repair Of Traumatic Subclavian Artery Pseudoaneurysm: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature, Mohamad M. Gouda, Mohamad Taha

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Traumatic subclavian artery injury resulting in pseudoaneurysm formation is relatively uncommon. With the increasing percutaneous arterial interventions utilization worldwide, the number of pseudoaneurysm formation has increased owing to iatrogenic arterial injury. After trauma, injury of subclavian artery early appears, and many complications such as life-threatening bleeding, the creation of pseudoaneurysm, and brachial plexus compression may be caused by the arterial rupture. The presence of large hematoma and pulsatile palpable mass in the supraclavicular region should raise the suspicion of severe vascular injury. Surgical thoracotomy and direct arterial repair traditionally treated subclavian artery pseudoaneurysms. However, significant morbidity is usually associated with …

Trauma Recovery: A Heroic Journey, Brenda Keck, Lisa Compton, Corie Schoeneberg, Tucker Compton Jul 2018

Trauma Recovery: A Heroic Journey, Brenda Keck, Lisa Compton, Corie Schoeneberg, Tucker Compton

Heroism Science

Trauma survivors who choose to enter into trauma recovery may be viewed as individuals embarking on a hero’s journey. Historically, many of the coping strategies utilized by individuals who are experiencing post-traumatic stress have been viewed as inherently disordered and personally dysfunctional. An alternative perspective of these behaviors calls for an examination of strengths present within trauma survivors, suggesting a reframe of their symptomology as ingenuity in coping during adverse circumstances and an appreciation for the difficulty of living with traumatic memories. This article highlights the challenging process of trauma recovery as it parallels Campbell’s (1949) metaphor of the hero’s …

Thoracoscopically Assisted Vertebral Reconstruction Simultaneously With Percutaneous Pedicle Screws Fixation For Management Of Thoracic And Thoracolumbar Spinal Fractures., Mohamed Shater, Ali Abou-Madawi, Hassan Alshatoury, Khaled Elsayed, Mootaz Shousha Jul 2018

Thoracoscopically Assisted Vertebral Reconstruction Simultaneously With Percutaneous Pedicle Screws Fixation For Management Of Thoracic And Thoracolumbar Spinal Fractures., Mohamed Shater, Ali Abou-Madawi, Hassan Alshatoury, Khaled Elsayed, Mootaz Shousha

Advanced Spine Journal

Background Data: Thoracic and thoracolumbar fractures are commonly provoked by axial compression which disrupts the anterior column. In this setting, posterior stabilization using pedicle screws alone may lead to delayed kyphosis and hardware failure due to inadequate anterior column support. Application of thoracoscopic anterior column reconstruction while patient in prone position for posterior percutaneous instrumentation is a minimally invasive combined technique.Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of percutaneous pedicle screw instrumentation in combination with thoracoscopically assisted vertebral reconstruction using expandable titanium cage.Study Design: Prospective clinical case study.Patients and Methods: Eighteen patients with acute thoracolumbar fractures with different preoperative neurological status were …

Wiltse Approach Versus Conventional Open Approach In Neurologically Intact Patients With Thoracolumbar Fractures: Clinical And Radiological Outcome Study, Mohamed Shater, Mohamed Hassanein Jul 2018

Wiltse Approach Versus Conventional Open Approach In Neurologically Intact Patients With Thoracolumbar Fractures: Clinical And Radiological Outcome Study, Mohamed Shater, Mohamed Hassanein

Advanced Spine Journal

Background Data: Percutaneous screws fixation became popular as it depends on minimal muscle destruction and no para-spinal muscle stripping. However, there is a lot of disadvantages of percutaneous fixation technique including the high radiation exposure. Complications reported in conventional midline approach including muscle stripping from lamina and spinous processes and long-term postoperative pain and muscle weakness led the spine surgeon to rediscover minimally invasive technique to manage spinal fractures through posterior approach. One of these techniques is Wiltse technique which access the pedicle through blunt dissection between the longissimus muscle and multifidus muscle.Purpose: This study aims to compare pedicle screw …

Comparison Of Thoracic Epidural Analgesia Versus Parenteral Analgesia For Traumatic Multiple Rib Fractures, Ashraf A. Zein Eldin, Mohamed S. Abdelmotelb, Mohamed M. Abdelsabour, Moharram A. Mohamed

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objective The aim of this study was to compare between epidural analgesia and parenteral analgesia for management of traumatic multiple rib fractures. Background Chest wall trauma is most commonly seen after motor vehicle collision and accounts for 8% of all trauma admissions. It is a marker of severity and contributes to the morbidity and mortality of injured patients, with the elderly and patients with poor respiratory reserve being most vulnerable. Rib fractures are the commonest of all chest injuries and are identified in 10% of patients after trauma. Pain limits one's ability to cough and breathe deeply, resulting in sputum …

Traumatic Odontoid Epiphysiolysis In A Young Child, Case_Report And Literature Review, Ahmed Sultan

Advanced Spine Journal

Background Data: Traumatic Odontoid Epiphysiolysis fractures, although rare in the overall incidence of spinal trauma, these fractures are one of the common fractures in young children. The appropriate treatment of this type of odontoid fractures remains controversial. The rarity of literature reports on these fractures and limited number of cases prevented the consensus on the optimal line of treatment. Purpose: To clarify the role of non-operative treatment in this type of fracture and ascertain its beneficial role in reaching sound fusion.Study Design: Prospective assessment of Traumatic Odontoid Epiphysiolysis in young child with literature review.Patients and Methods: A 4 years female …

The Proposed Etiologies Of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Jillian Blueford Jan 2018

The Proposed Etiologies Of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Jillian Blueford

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) evolves after suffering consecutive, traumatizing forms of abuse during an individual's early years. Repetitive abuse can lead an individual to develop two or more personalities, and then experience memory loss or other cognitive gaps in his or her early childhood that continue to the present day. This can have devastating effects on millions of people because a significant percentage of affected individuals do not recognize the symptoms or choose to believe that DID does not exist. By analyzing the literature currently available, this article creates a central base of popular and emerging models that clinicians use …

Open Fractures: A Review, Alex Telis Jan 2018

Open Fractures: A Review, Alex Telis

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Open fractures occur most commonly in men aged more than 50 years, which may result in lifetime costs for patients and healthcare systems. In the past 5 years, high-quality evidence for direct treatment of these fractures has increased. The expedient administration of intravenous antibiotics continues to be one of the most predictive factors of infection prevention. Open fractures are complicated injuries to classify owing to multiple factors that will be reviewed in the current study: severity of fracture and soft-tissue injury, thoroughness of debridement, time to initial treatment, modality of antibiotic delivery, and timing of definitive fracture fixation and soft-tissue …
