Objective The aim of the study was to assess the association between heat shock protein (HSP) 70-2 + 1267 A/G polymorphism and diabetic nephropathy (DN) in type II diabetes mellitus. Background DN is a life-threatening microvascular complication of type II diabetes. Oxidative stress plays a main role in its pathogenesis. As a consequence, a cellular adaptive response occurs requiring functional chaperones, so that the induction of HSPs is a maintained response in counteracting this oxidative stress. HSP70-2 + 1267 A/G and HSP70-hom + 2437 T/C polymorphisms may play an important role in susceptibility to and/or progression of DN. Patients and …

Study Of Oxidative Stress In Common Neonatal Disorders And Evaluation Of Antioxidant Strategies, Mohamed H. Bahbah, Mohamed A. El-Shafie, Mohsen M. Deeb, Seham M. Ragab

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objectives The aim of this work is to study oxidative stress and the profile of antioxidant mechanisms in common neonatal disorders. These disorders are prematurity, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, and perinatal asphyxia. This study also aimed to evaluate the effect of treatment of these disorders on oxidative stress. Background In a broad sense, oxidative stress may be considered an imbalance between prooxidant and antioxidant forces or between the amount of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant defenses. The term oxygen radical disease of neonatology has been suggested to designate diseases whose pathogenesis includes tissue aggression from free radicals and reactive oxygen species. However, …

Oxidants And Antioxidants Role In Acne Vulgaris, Amira Adel Mahmoud, Ashraf Abd El Raoof Dawood, Mohamed Abd El Wahed Gaber Jun 2014

Oxidants And Antioxidants Role In Acne Vulgaris, Amira Adel Mahmoud, Ashraf Abd El Raoof Dawood, Mohamed Abd El Wahed Gaber

Menoufia Medical Journal

Objectives The aim of the study was to determine the effects of oxidative stress in acne vulgaris by measuring the levels of an oxidant [malondialdehyde (MDA)] and an antioxidant [superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme] in acne patients. Background Acne vulgaris is one of the common dermatological diseases, and its pathogenesis is multifactorial. Materials and methods Twenty-seven consecutive acne patients and 10 controls were enrolled. The parameters of oxidative stress, such as serum SOD and MDA, were measured spectrophotometrically. Results There was significantly higher enzymatic level of SOD (P < 0.001) and MDA (P < 0.001) in blood of patient with acne compared with that of healthy control. There was significant positive correlation between serum SOD and serum MDA level. Conclusion Oxidative stress exists in acne patients.

Effects Of Ozone Therapy And Taurine On Ischemia/Reperfusion-Induced Testicular Injury In A Rat Testicular Torsion Model, Tolga Reşat Aydos, Mehmet Murad Başar, Oğuz Kul, Hasan Tarik Atmaca, Tuba Uzunali̇oğlu, Üçler Kisa, Oğuzhan Eki̇n Efe

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To investigate the effect of ozone and/or taurine treatment comparatively on testicular damage due to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in an experimental torsion model in rats. Materials and methods: Adult Wistar rats with and without torsion/detorsion were used. In order to monitor the effect of ozone and/or taurine treatment on testicular damage due to I/R injury, following histopathological investigation apoptotic indexes were scored by TUNEL method. Moreover, tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1), caspase 3, caspase 8, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF\alpha), and cytochrome C immunostainings were performed and the levels of malondialdehyde, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide …

Association Analyses Of Oxidative Stress, Aerobic Capacity, Daily Physical Activity, And Body Composition Parameters In Patients With Mild To Moderate Copd, Abdurrahman Genç, Kağan Üçok, Ümi̇t Şener, Tülay Koyuncu, Olcay Akar, Sefa Çeli̇k, Mehmet Ünlü

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To investigate total oxidant and antioxidant status, maximal aerobic capacity, daily physical activity, pulmonary functions, and body composition changes, as well as the associations among these parameters, in patients with mild to moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) versus healthy controls. Materials and methods: The study included 30 male patients newly diagnosed with COPD and 30 body mass index-matched, nonsmoker male controls. Maximal aerobic capacity, daily physical activity, total oxidant and antioxidant status, pulmonary function tests, body composition, and anthropometric parameters were measured. Results: Maximal aerobic capacity and total antioxidant values were lower in patients with COPD compared to the …

Effects Of Short-Term Hyperglycemia On The Vasoconstriction Of The Aorta, Soner Dönmez, Osman Gökalp, Mustafa Doğan, Hüseyi̇n Vural, Barbaros Yi̇ği̇t Jan 2014

Effects Of Short-Term Hyperglycemia On The Vasoconstriction Of The Aorta, Soner Dönmez, Osman Gökalp, Mustafa Doğan, Hüseyi̇n Vural, Barbaros Yi̇ği̇t

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To investigate vasoconstrictor responses of healthy blood vessels to short-term hyperglycemic conditions such as postprandial hyperglycemia, gestational diabetes mellitus, and steroid-induced diabetes. Materials and methods: Female Wistar rat aorta rings were incubated in normal (11 mM) and high (22 mM and 44 mM) glucose concentrations for 4 h. Responses of vasoconstriction were measured in reaction to serotonin (10-5 M), phenylephrine (10-6 M), and KCl (60 mM) compared to the ambient condition, including different glucose concentrations. Results: While the responses of vasoconstriction to KCl were increased in the presence of Krebs' solution with high glucose, no statistically significant changes were observed …
