Decreasing The Incidence Of Skin Damage Caused By Physical Agents, Mei-Chu Chen, Der-Sheng Han

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Physical therapists play a crucial role in preventing skin damage, the causes of which are usually due to improper machine settings and a failure to adhere to standard operation procedures during treatments involving physical agents. To decrease incidents, this study examines the causes of skin damage, and drafting intervention and evaluation index. This paper analyzed 12 cases of skin damage occurring during physical therapy at the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation of a regional hospital, between Jan. 2006 and Aug. 2009. The probable causes were failure on the part of the therapist to inform the patient on operation procedures and …

The basic data and risk factors of post-operative complications were recorded. The complications, mechanical ventilation duration, and hospital days in the two groups with and without the education were compared; so were the high risk and nonhigh risk group according to the risk score of the post-operative pulmonary …

Developmental Pattern Of Tibio-Femoral Angle In A Cohort Of Nigerian Children: A Preliminary Report, Olufemi O. Oyewole, Aderonke O. Akinpelu Oct 2011

Developmental Pattern Of Tibio-Femoral Angle In A Cohort Of Nigerian Children: A Preliminary Report, Olufemi O. Oyewole, Aderonke O. Akinpelu

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

A cohort measurement of tibio-femoral angle (TFA) is more meaningful and reliable than a cross-sectional survey in investigating TFA pattern of development. This study reports the pattern of knee angle development in a cohort of 152 normal Nigerian children during the first 12 months of life. The infants’ tibio-femoral angle, inter-condylar, and inter-malleoli distances were measured at monthly intervals using clinical methods. Age-reference values were generated. Results showed that the developmental pattern of tibio-femoral angle is extreme varus at birth with values ranging from 5°to 25°. The mean varus at birth (13.2±3.7°) decreased to reach the lowest value (5.6±0.7°) at …

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is an integral part of health professionals’ training. However, there is little research concerning learning outcomes in the allied health student population. This study explored changes in self-reported EBP knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours, and actual EBP knowledge of entry-level physiotherapy students following exposure to formal EBP training. Methods: Entry-level Bachelors and Masters physiotherapy students were surveyed before and after completing EBP training courses. Two validated and reliable surveys, the Evidence-Based Practice Profile Questionnaire (EBP2) and the Knowledge of Research Evidence Competencies (K-REC) survey were used. The EBP2 included self-reported domains: relevance, sympathy, terminology (knowledge), practice, and confidence. …

The Development Of A Computer-Assisted Learning Module In Physical Therapy Neurologic Education: A Mixed Methods Case, Diana Veneri

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Computer-assisted learning (CAL) interventions have been used in contemporary allied health and medical education to supplement classroom instruction. Emphasis has shifted from tutorial activities to creating interventions that address higher level critical thinking skills. Purpose: The purpose of this mixed methods study was to investigate student perceptions of their critical thinking skills and overall impression of a CAL intervention. Methods: Videotape of patient treatment activities were embedded into a Microsoft PowerPoint™ presentation to guide students through the processes of evaluation and treatment to create a CAL module. Physical therapy students from two neighboring universities volunteered to participate. Students were randomly …

The readability level of many patient education materials is too high for patients to comprehend, placing the patient’s health at risk. Since health professionals often recommend Internet-based patient education resources, they must ensure that the readability of information provided to consumers is at an appropriate level. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the readability of educational brochures found on the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) consumer website. Methods: Fourteen educational brochures on the APTA website in March 2008 were analyzed using the following assessments: Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Flesch Reading Ease, Fry Readability Formula, Simple Measure of Gobbledygook …

This study aimed to assess Nigerian physiotherapists’ cognitive and affective traits in providing care to patients living with AIDS (PWA). Methods: Physiotherapists across Nigeria (N=132) were surveyed using a 43-item questionnaire that elicited information on their demographic characteristics, knowledge of transmission, universal precaution and pathophysiology on AIDS, their feeling of preparedness, comfort, ethical disposition to care for PWA and their willingness to assess and provide intervention to PWA in different clinical scenarios. Results: The physiotherapists’ knowledge of AIDS pathophysiology was unsatisfactory, …

Incorporating Evidence In Clinical Education; Barriers And Opportunities In Allied Health, Clare Delany, Andrea Bailocerkowski

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Clinical education is a key component of health professional education. Clinical educators, like clinicians, are increasingly expected to access and apply evidence from clinical education theories to inform their teaching methods and approaches. Purpose: This study evaluated personal and organizational factors that influenced the ability to access and apply clinical education research evidence into clinical teaching in a group of allied health practitioners at one large metropolitan hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Method: A Cross-sectional survey based on a previously published survey of clinical physiotherapists was custom-designed to examine the factors that influence evidence based practices (EBP) of a range of …

Most infective organisms have developed resistance against antibiotics. There is need to find other means to deliver antibiotics locally. There appears to be limited studies on the use of gentamicin sulphate iontophoresis in wound management. The participant in this study was a subject diagnosed with mild head injury secondary to motor vehicle accident who later developed a unilateral pressure sore on the left gluteal region. The subject received 15-minutes of gentamicin sulphate iontophoresis (Interrupted Direct Current) three times a week for five weeks. The case report showed that there was a 65.7% reduction in wound surface area of the decubitus …

Method: A randomised controlled trial was undertaken with 50 third year physiotherapy students from James Cook University, Queensland Australia. Participants in the intervention group underwent two four hour sessions of patient simulator training in addition to their normal cardiorespiratory physiotherapy training prior to attending clinical placements. Participants in both the intervention and control groups were assessed weekly for six weeks on their clinical ability whilst on clinical placement. Results: Mann-Whitney was used to compare the training group with the control group. No …
