Background: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the second-leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. There are sex differences in the pathophysiology of HIE, particularly in microglia, which are critical in the immune response. Prior work highlights microglial aggregation in the hippocampus of human infants as a marker for HIE, but it is unknown whether this differs by sex.

Aim: We compare the microglial response in post-mortem hippocampal tissue from male and female neonates diagnosed with HIE vs. Controls who expired from other causes.

A saddle pulmonary Embolism (PE) represents a blood clot within the pulmonary artery vasculature that lodges itself between both the left and right pulmonary artery. They can be described as being massive or sub-massive. Massive PE’s cause large clot burden that puts the patient risk for sudden hemodynamic collapse, while sub-massive saddle PE’s typically do not cause hemodynamic collapse nor significant cardiac effects, such as right heart dysfunction. As clinicians, we need to be vigilant about whether a patient is placed into that criteria of sub-massive or massive and act quickly to start management that could be lifesaving.

Background: Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is the leading cause of blindness among working-age adults. Photoreceptors are the most numerous and metabolically demanding cells in the retina thus oxygen is essential for retinal function. It has been reported that photoreceptors found in rat retina are specifically vulnerable to hypoxia. Hypoxia-induced metabolic stress leads to photoreceptor atrophy and retinopathy. Furthermore, photoreceptor cell death is known to occur mainly through apoptosis. Storage Temperature Affects MüLler Glia Susceptibility To Hypoxia, Assraa Jassim, Martin Garcia, Andrew Tsin, Laura Valdez, Jose Martinez

Background/Objective: We conducted this project to differentiate cell susceptibility to hypoxia (low O2 level) between immortalized Müller glia (MIO-M1) stored in -80 versus liquid nitrogen.

Method: MIO-M1 cells were cultured and seeded in 12 well plates at 40K/well and in 6 well plates at 75K/well until confluence. Cell culture conditions: centrifugation time and speed, neutralization, and storage temperature were varied. Cells were subjected to chemically induced hypoxia by treatment with 300 and 400uM CoCl2 for 24 and 48hours. Oxygen level was measured in cells, cells were imaged and counted.

Results: Centrifugation and neutralization conditions did not affect cell survival. We …

Background: Hypoxia, a suboptimal level of oxygen, evokes stress response in cells and activated hypoxia signaling has been largely established as a pro-metastasis and pro-angiogenic factor for tumor cells. On the other hand, age-related neurodegenerative disorders are characterized by hypoxic environment, accumulation of molecular garbage and induction of premature senescence. Several recent studies have reported anti-stress impact of the intermittent induction of hypoxia signaling in these cells.

Background: A variety of environmental stresses have been shown to contribute to poor quality of life, tissue dysfunctions and ailments including metabolic disorders, cognitive impairment, and accelerated aging. Oxidative stress (an imbalance between the production and processing of highly reactive oxygen species) is largely associated with these phenotypes. Whereas drug development and disease therapeutics have advanced remarkably in last three decades, there are still limited options for stress management. Hypoxia is a common motif among tumors, contributing to metastasis, angiogenesis, cellular epigenetic abnormality, and resistance to cancer therapy. Hypoxia also plays a pivotal role in oncological studies, where it can be used as a principal target for new anti-cancer therapeutic methods. Oxygen nanobubbles were designed in an effort to target the hypoxic tumor regions, thus interrupting the hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) regulatory pathway and inhibiting tumor progression. At less than 100nm, oxygen nanobubbles act as a vehicle for site-specific oxygen delivery, while also serving as an ultrasound contrast agent for advanced imaging purposes.
