Early Diagnosis Of Celiac Disease In Pediatric Patients, Nicole Gertsberg Apr 2023

Early Diagnosis Of Celiac Disease In Pediatric Patients, Nicole Gertsberg

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Celiac disease affects about 1% of the population; however, the indistinct symptoms make it difficult to diagnose. Children are vulnerable populations who are able to experience this disease, but go severely undiagnosed. As a result, when this population matures, additional health issues arise such as other autoimmune diseases. Different studies were done regarding diet modifications, gaps in research, and treatment options for Celiac disease. This is the reason to investigate whether early diagnosis in childhood will achieve better health outcomes through diet modifications. A cohort study will be performed on Celiac disease patients, ages 5 to 15 years old at …

Subdural Hematomas And The Help Of Computed Tomography, Kelsey Jackson Jan 2023

Subdural Hematomas And The Help Of Computed Tomography, Kelsey Jackson

Medical Imaging Senior Posters

Subdural hematomas can occur at any age but are most commonly seen in the elderly population. Subdural hematomas affects 21 in every 100,000 individuals, and are becoming more common. They can occur for a variety of reasons such as trauma or underlying health conditions. Subdural hematomas occur due to a collection of blood in the subdural space between the dura and arachnoid mater. Computed tomography is the best imaging modality in the aiding of diagnosing subdural hematomas due to the easy accessibility, short scan times, and the ability to create cross sectional images. Subdural hematomas can be classified into categories …

Proposing An Rna Interference (Rnai)-Based Treatment For Human Immunodeficiency Virus (Hiv) By Analyzing The Post-Transcriptional Gene Targeting Of Sars-Cov-2, Hepatitis C Virus, And A549 Lung Cancer Cells, Arjun Jagdeesh Jan 2023

Proposing An Rna Interference (Rnai)-Based Treatment For Human Immunodeficiency Virus (Hiv) By Analyzing The Post-Transcriptional Gene Targeting Of Sars-Cov-2, Hepatitis C Virus, And A549 Lung Cancer Cells, Arjun Jagdeesh

Undergraduate Research Posters

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that infects CD4+ T cell lymphocytes in humans, leading to the development of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) if left untreated. While current treatment methods, including antiretroviral combination treatments, effectively limit HIV replication, HIV can evade these treatments due to its high mutation rate. Long-term antiretroviral treatment can also be toxic to patients, meaning patients would benefit from a new mechanism of HIV treatment. RNA interference (RNAi) is an antiviral pathway found in mammals, plants, and insects that involves a small-interfering RNA that is incorporated into a protein complex called the RNA-induced Silencing Complex …

The Use Of Nuclear Medicine In Detecting And Treating Mental Health Diseases, Jena Simmons, Gina Capitano, Walter Kierzkowski

Medical Imaging Senior Posters

Mental health disorders affect over 792 million people around the world, and a leading cause for disability. Mental health disorders include a plethora of conditions that affect mood, thinking and behavior, including but not limited to, depression, dementia, anxiety, autism, and schizophrenia. The most common method of diagnosis is a psychological evaluation, which can lack accuracy if performed as the only method of diagnosis. Brain scans are done utilizing Positron Emission Tomography …

Computed Tomography Of Cardiac Malignancies, Nicholas Malloy Jan 2021

Computed Tomography Of Cardiac Malignancies, Nicholas Malloy

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Cardiac malignancies are tumors that develop in the heart; they are commonly asymptomatic, hard to locate and associated with a poor prognosis. The size and location of the tumor in the heart often play a role in the early or late discovery of the tumor. Cardiac malignancies can be either benign, such as cardiac myxoma or rhabdomyoma, or malignant, such as cardiac lymphoma or angiosarcoma. Fortunately, the advancement of imaging modalities—especially computed tomography—has improved early detection rates of cardiac tumors. Computed Tomography provides optimal spatial resolution for detection of malignancies and is typically more readily available than most modalities. Computed …

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Peripheral Artery Disease (Pad) In Interventional Radiography, Evan Busher Jan 2020

Diagnosis And Treatment Of Peripheral Artery Disease (Pad) In Interventional Radiography, Evan Busher

Medical Imaging Senior Posters

Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is a narrowing of the peripheral arteries which supply blood to the legs, arms, stomach, and heart. This narrowing occurs due to atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of plaque or fat on the walls of the blood vessels. Atherosclerosis results in the restriction of blood flow to the desired site, which is most often the legs. The most common symptoms for PAD are cramps or pain in the leg when walking, which subsides during periods of rest. A brachial-ankle index test can be administered to monitor the blood pressures in the upper and lower limbs to …

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the effectiveness of various conservative PT interventions in treating stress, urge, and mixed UI in older women.

Methods: Two searches of the literature were performed …

Type 2 Diabetes Medication Breakdown, Kristen Keene Jan 2020

Type 2 Diabetes Medication Breakdown, Kristen Keene

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

There are many new medications for treatment of type 2 diabetes and these medications have many positive effects that go beyond lowering blood glucose. However, many of these medications are expensive and some insurance plans don’t cover them. Many patients struggle to pay for their diabetes medications and providers often are unsure of which medications will be covered by insurance. This project was designed to enhance patient education regarding diabetes medications and potential costs associated.

Treatment & Management Of Acute Sinusitis In The Primary Care Setting, Vanessa Trieu Jan 2018

Treatment & Management Of Acute Sinusitis In The Primary Care Setting, Vanessa Trieu

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

Sinusitis is a leading cause of primary care visits. The majority of cases are due to a viral infection, which can be self-treated with supportive care. Many patients are unaware of this and seek medical attention prematurely, incurring significant healthcare costs and resulting in antibiotic misuse. On the other hand, a prolonged infection or the presence of atypical symptoms does warrant medical attention and can potentially lead to untoward consequences if inadequately treated. The purpose of this project is to provide patient education on the expected course of an acute sinus infection and how to proceed with management.

Drug Treatment Court: The Power Of Understanding Addiction, Asaad Traina

Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects

The Drug Treatment Court in Burlington is one of about 3000 drug treatment courts nationwide. They were developed as an “alternate sentencing court”, a method of restorative justice that would allow people who had multiple criminal charges related to substance abuse to overcome their addiction, have their criminal charges dismissed, and pursue a fuller life. As part of this program, many participants attend an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). As a third year medical student, I lead an educational session with the aim of helping participants understand the neurophysiology behind their addiction.
