Navigating when to intervene against parents’ wishes is a difficult task in pediatrics. Different frameworks have been proposed, but disagreements remain. One problem debated about in pediatric intervention principles often refer to different kinds of interventions (e.g. calling Child Protective Services, consulting the Ethics Committee). This project reports results of a critical scoping review of recent bioethics literature about the concept of pediatric intervention principles.

TITLE:
Social participation in people with a developmental disability: A systematic review
PURPOSE:
People with developmental disabilities often experience difficulty with social skills and engagement in social interactions. One in six children aged 3-17 have a developmental disability (CDC, 2023). People with developmental disabilities experience loneliness, which can affect participation in meaningful occupations (Petroutsou et al., 2018). Participating in social interactions can decrease stress and anxiety and improve overall quality of life (CDC, 2023). The purpose of this systematic review was to determine occupational therapy interventions that increase social participation for people with developmental disabilities.
DESIGN:
We conducted a systematic …

House Staff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference (2016-2019)
Introduction
The development of acute kidney injury (AKI) during hospitalizations has become a widespread problem that leads to prolonged hospital stays and an increased risk of the development of renal failure. Several national prospective studies have been conducted to identify the most common causes of hospital acquired acute kidney injury (HAAKI) including contrast-induced, drug-induced, sepsis with hypotension, and comorbid organ dysfunction. To attempt to reduce HAAKI and its long-term consequences both to patients and the healthcare system, our study aimed to review creatinine changes among patients admitted to five general medicine teams. Our study goal was to see whether spreading …

Efficacy Of Problem-Solving Interventions For Improving Executive Functioning Outcomes In Patients With Acquired Brain Injuries: A Systematic Review, Rebecca Booth, Emily Heckler, Molly Reese
Communication Sciences and Disorders: Systematic Review Publications
Background and Objective(s): Individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI) often demonstrate executive functioning (EF) impairments that impact their ability to identify and solve problems within their daily lives. This systematic review attempts to consolidate available research supporting problem-solving interventions as effective, evidence-based practice for addressing EF deficits in individuals with ABI.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted using the databases Ovid Medline, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. Studies met the following inclusion criteria: 1) problem-solving intervention, 2) EF outcomes, 3) individuals with acquired brain injuries. Studies were excluded based on the following criteria: 1) single case study design, 2) family-centered interventions and …

Therapeutic Listening® - Quickshifts Support For Pediatric Intervention, Bryant Luong, Ann Malloy, Shannon Preto
Student Research Posters
Few empirical studies have been conducted to provide evidence for the effectiveness of Therapeutic Listening - Quickshifts (TL-Q). Anecdotally, TL-Q has produced consistent positive results for therapists and clients as a pediatric intervention. Therefore, it is imperative to research TL-Q’s efficacy, which may lead to its broader implementation. In this study, the researchers examined the effectiveness of TL-Q intervention for children with sensory processing difficulties to improve participation and function in 1) school performance, (2) self-regulation and arousal, (3) activities of daily living (ADLs), (4) social/emotional skills, and (5) sensorimotor skills. Over the course of an 8 week prospective study, …

Depression Intervention Programs In Low-Income High Schools, Gopika Hari
Undergraduate Research Posters
It is estimated that 2.6 million adolescents suffer from major depressive episodes each year. Research has noted that symptoms in youth have become indicators of mental health complications later in life. Studies reveal that low income is a risk factor for depression and that socioeconomically-disadvantaged teenagers are more than twice as likely to develop mental illnesses. Only roughly 25% of children with mental illnesses receive adequate help and 80% of these resources come from schools. This study focuses on establishing the importance of depression intervention programs in low-income high schools and on designing novel guidelines for effective protocols. A compilation …

Improving Patient Understanding Of Low Back Pain In The Primary Care Setting, Xiaoyu Lu
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Low back pain (LBP) is the most common type of pain reported by U.S. adults across all age groups and is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Up to 80% of individuals will experience LBP at some point in their lives. 411 patients ages 20-98 were seen over a one-year period for LBP at Castleton Family Health Center in Rutland County, Vermont. Patients and providers both saw a benefit to having educational materials on LBP in the office.
