Development Of A Universal Design Playroom For Children With Visual Impairments, Alejandra Sanchez, Angela Blackwell, Gina Benevente
Fall 2020 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
This project aims to create a safe and inclusive playroom for children 0-4-year-old with visual impairment (VI), and to promote the development in social interaction, motor, and process (thinking) skills. With the use of play, children with VI can improve their developmental skills by their interaction with peers and the environment which will improve their well-being. The Person-Environment-Occupation- Performance Model was used to find dysfunction in the constructs that would limit the performance in play for children with VI. The project renovated the San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired (SALBVI) playroom to accommodate the needs of the …

Posters
A 13-year-old right hand dominant young lady presented to a pediatric sports medicine clinic for evaluation of decreased ROM and pain in her left elbow with an associated locking sensation that had been occurring for over a year. Two weeks prior to presentation, these symptoms had been acutely worsening as she was practicing for over 10 hours per day for an upcoming dance competition. The patient’s pain is described as a “tightness” and is localized to her antecubital fossa medial to her biceps tendon. The feeling of tightness occurs most prominently with end extension and flexion of the elbow. She …

Routine surveillance cultures are an essential part of health maintenance for people with cystic fibrosis (CF). The Cystic Fibrosis Foundations (CFF) recommends that respiratory cultures be obtained every three months. The CF Care Center at Children’s Mercy Kansas City (CMKC) also obtains respiratory cultures when there is an acute change in respiratory symptoms. The COVID-29 pandemic resulted in ambulatory clinic closures and an inability to obtain surveillance respiratory cultures. A creative solution for obtaining respiratory cultures was needed during the pandemic.

Musical Shoes Shine A New Light On The Clinical World, Emma Madonna
Transformations: Presentation Slides
This study focused on the application of a unique technology designed originally to supply biofeedback to dancers, but in this case was used to assist a child learning to walk while battling the effects of Cerebral Palsy. The music shoes, called “Electroskip”, utilize a biofeedback system that generates different sounds/beats/songs when an individual is walking and placing pressure on their heel or toe. The study lasted six weeks with 2 sessions per week. While the Electroskip technology was worn for each session, it was only activated every other session. Data indicated that at the end of the study the child …

Raising Awareness About The Vermont Donor Milk Center, Rosie Friedman, Emi Eakin
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
The Vermont Donor Milk Center (VDMC) is an emerging community resource that provides donated, pasteurized breast milk to new parents for their infants. Upon questioning, we identified that many providers did not know about the VDMC or how to prescribe milk. In addition, VDMC expressed that they have not been able to complete the community outreach they had initially hoped for. We chose to dedicate our project to disseminating information about VDMC to perinatal care providers in Vermont.
