Improving Self-Efficacy Of Primary Care Providers With Assessment Of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, Kimberly Paddock Farr
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractDiabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most common complications of diabetes. DPN contributes to significant pain, debility and injury to diabetic patients. The majority of diabetic patients are managed in the primary care practice (PCP) setting. A local chapter of a nurse practitioner association identified a lack of knowledge of current evidence-based guidelines for effective screening and assessment of DPN in the PCP environment. The practice-focused question for this project was to determine if an educational intervention on evidence-based screening and assessment would improve nurse practitioner’s knowledge with DPN screening and diagnosis in PCP. Mezirow’s transformative theory of …

A Self-Guided Educational Program Based On Informatics Competency Self-Assessment, Brenda J. Kulhanek
A Self-Guided Educational Program Based On Informatics Competency Self-Assessment, Brenda J. Kulhanek
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The informatics competency gap for nurses has existed since the first use of technology in healthcare. Although numerous informatics competencies for nurses have been identified over the past 20 years, there is a lack of standardized educational content to help address the informatics competency gap. In a digital healthcare environment, the ability for nurses to understand and use informatics competencies is essential and the lack of informatics competency has a far-reaching impact. Based on the identified gaps, an informatics competency self-assessment tool with associated microeducation was developed to provide a standardized learning approach that would be supported by stakeholders in …
Food Insecurity In Oncology Patients: An Educational Intervention For Nurses, Chinelo Pernilla Onwuazombe
Food Insecurity In Oncology Patients: An Educational Intervention For Nurses, Chinelo Pernilla Onwuazombe
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractFood insecurity is not having enough food or resources or not being able to procure nutritious foods. An observation that nurses in one oncology clinic rarely assessed their patients for food insecurity as part of their regular assessment led to the development and testing of an educational intervention for nurses which was to create awareness on the importance of assessing food insecurity among oncology patients and to learn to use the Household Food Insecurity Assess Scale (HFIAS) in assessing patients. Summative evaluation was done using a pre/and posttest. The Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and the Virginia Henderson nursing need theories …
Impact Of A Standardized Situation, Background, Assessment, And Recommendation Tool On Satisfaction And Communication In The Perioperative Area, Salomy Abraham
Impact Of A Standardized Situation, Background, Assessment, And Recommendation Tool On Satisfaction And Communication In The Perioperative Area, Salomy Abraham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractEffective communication among health care providers is critical to maintain patient safety during the handoff of care. Communication breakdown during handoff can lead to medical errors and sentinel events. The perioperative area is a vulnerable area that is prone to communication errors due to the involvement of providers from various disciplines and the nature of the quick patient turnovers within the perioperative area. To ensure proper communication during the handoff in the perioperative area, a unit-specific handoff tool is required. The focus of the project was to implement a standardized situation, background, assessment, and recommendation (SBAR) communication tool in the …
Effectiveness Of A Standardized Fall Assessment Tool In Reducing Falls Among Elder Home Health Clients, Terica M. Woods
Effectiveness Of A Standardized Fall Assessment Tool In Reducing Falls Among Elder Home Health Clients, Terica M. Woods
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Because of the physiological changes that occur with the normal aging process, falls tend to have more serious consequences in individuals age 65 and older. The purpose of this systematic review of literature was to analyze studies that addressed the impact of a multifactorial fall risk assessment tool on decreasing falls in the elderly home health patient population following hospitalization. The conceptual model for this project was Roper, Logan, and Tierney’s activity of daily living model. A narrative analysis was used to analyze 16 selected articles from the CINAHL, ProQuest and MEDLINE databases. Results indicated that implementing fall assessment tools …
Improving Health Literacy Assessments In Pediatrics, Kristina Michelle Wright
Improving Health Literacy Assessments In Pediatrics, Kristina Michelle Wright
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Low health literacy (LHL)--when patients do not understand their treatment or medications--has been linked to poor healthcare outcomes. Nurses need to know how to assess health literacy (HL) and teach pediatric patients and their families to help ensure that patients and family members can understand and follow health education messages. Evidence-based HL tools were obtained from a literature search and used to create a nursing staff education program on pediatric patient HL assessment and education. The project answered the practice-focused question that asked whether a staff education program on HL assessment and management would improve nursing knowledge of HL for …
Enhancing Nurses' Assessment Of Pain Management In Dementia Patients, Norma Jean Boone
Enhancing Nurses' Assessment Of Pain Management In Dementia Patients, Norma Jean Boone
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Chronic pain contributes to morbidity, mortality, and disability in millions of people. Prevalence rates for pain are as high as 83% among the 5.2 million older adults living with a diagnosis of dementia. The purpose of the quality improvement project was to assess nurses' knowledge of pain assessment and management in a 45-bed Veterans Health Administration long-term care facility serving older adults with dementia. Knowles' adult learning theory served as the theoretical framework and the knowledge to action model supported the translation of evidence into practice. A convenience sample of 27 licensed and unlicensed nursing staff answered the 16-question, 5-point …

An Evaluation Of Service Learning For Associate Degree Nursing Students, Valerie Marie Pauli
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this study was to evaluate outcomes of the service-learning requirement in the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) curriculum at the local college. The problem addressed in this study was that the local ASN program lacked formal evaluation of the service-learning requirement. Guided by Kolb's model of experiential learning, a goal-based, summative evaluation employed as a qualitative case study explored the perceptions of 20 stakeholders including graduates, faculty members, and key community informants. The research questions focused on how service learning influenced a student's learning of cultural competence and the impact service learning had on the community. …

Nursing Students' And Novice Clinical Instructors' Experiences With Clinical Instruction And Assessment, Bridgett Alveta Jackson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adjunct faculty members make up a growing proportion of nursing school clinical faculty in the United States due to a nurse educator shortage in higher education. Many of the nurses hired as clinical faculty members have years of experience providing patient care, but they lack experience in clinical instruction and assessment. At a state community college in the southeastern United States, nursing students have expressed dissatisfaction in their course evaluations with inexperienced faculty in clinical programs. The experiences of both nursing students under the guidance of novice clinical instructors and clinical faculty were examined in this case study. The National …

Faculty Perceptions Regarding Best Practices In Clinical Dental Hygiene Assessment, Brenda Kaye Walstead
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative case study explored faculty perceptions regarding best practices and uses of assessment in a dental hygiene program at a small northwestern college. It was discovered that faculty in the program were assessing students in their clinical courses using widely varied methods, designs, and scoring tools. Faculty neither calibrated processes nor communicated about this problem. In addition, a review of the assessments in this local setting indicated a significant gap in the current guidelines for best practices in clinical assessment procedures. Knowles' adult learning theory served as the foundation for this study. Research questions were designed to obtain clinical …
A Pilot Study To Develop A Projective Method To Understand And Measure Resilience, Tina Chen
A Pilot Study To Develop A Projective Method To Understand And Measure Resilience, Tina Chen
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many factors affect resilience, such as personality traits and environmental support. A projective assessment has many advantages to understand a person as a whole. Up to present, there is no projective assessment for resilience. This dissertation was a pilot study to develop a projective method. Sixty-five college students participated in this study. Participants used words to describe their feelings after hearing an open-ended story with a traumatic event; they also completed the story. In this study, the resilience ratio, defined as the ratio of the number of positive responses divided by the number of total responses, reflected the resilience level …
