The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Disparities In Alabama Hospitals And Patient Experience, Phillimena Ashley Hopkins

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Patient satisfaction has been utilized to measure healthcare quality and outcomes, which affects reimbursement. Some claim such measures could be biased as they do not consider the patient’s socioeconomic status. Measuring the quality of care, Area Deprivation Index (ADI), and patient experience has been captured and publicly reported; and the measuring indicator Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCHAPS), however, hospitals serving patients in low ADI areas generally score poorly. Grounded in the theory of Donabedian, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between patient experience associated with socioeconomic disparities and how patients …

Impact Of Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams On Patient Quality Ratings, Sabrina Renee' Simpkins-Morris Jan 2023

Impact Of Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams On Patient Quality Ratings, Sabrina Renee' Simpkins-Morris

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractLeaders of health care organizations have limited evidence of the impact of pulmonary embolism response teams (PERTs) on quality outcomes for patients with an intermediate and high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE). The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether there was any significant difference in patient HCAHPS linear mean scores for instructions given about medication and overall care between acute care hospitals with and without PERT teams. Donabedian’s framework for assessing health care quality was used as the theoretical foundation for this research. Survey data collected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, as part of its Hospital Consumer …

Effect Of Clinical Trial Participation On Patient Experience And Overall Hospital Scores, Bridget Tyrka Jan 2021

Effect Of Clinical Trial Participation On Patient Experience And Overall Hospital Scores, Bridget Tyrka

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractDespite groundbreaking advances in technology and medicine in the United States and intensive examination of health services quality initiatives, issues of quality and patient-reported experience measures in the hospital sector remain unimproved. Although evidence-based medicine has improved through innovation in clinical research, healthcare systems have reportedly struggled to implement advances in medicine and lack the skill sets to become learning health systems. As clinical practice and clinical trials (CTs) have rarely intersected in the past, a significant lack of quantitative research has been dedicated to correlate improved patient outcomes with participation in CTs. The analysis sought a correlation, if any, …

Relationship Between Nurse-To-Patient Ratios, Patient Satisfaction Scores, And Hospital Profitability, Patrick Ross Bumstead Jan 2021

Relationship Between Nurse-To-Patient Ratios, Patient Satisfaction Scores, And Hospital Profitability, Patrick Ross Bumstead

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

In 2019, hospital profitability margins were at their lowest levels since the great recession due to a declining volume of patients. Hospital executives who fail to improve profitability are at risk of sustainability. Grounded in the service-profit chain theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine whether nurse-to-patient ratios and patient satisfaction scores significantly predict hospital profitability. Data were collected from 74 hospitals in Southern California from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services government database and publicly available financial statements. Results from multiple regression analysis were not statistically significant. A key recommendation is for hospital executives …

Sustainable Building Certification In Healthcare And Patient Satisfaction, Brian Jay Goehner Jan 2020

Sustainable Building Certification In Healthcare And Patient Satisfaction, Brian Jay Goehner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Eco-friendly healthcare delivery concepts are becoming more accepted as hospital leaders seek to control energy costs, mitigate contributions to climate change, and preserve scarce resources. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) offers healthcare leaders a framework for designing and constructing sustainable facilities that meet efficiency goals. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to build an understanding of whether LEED certification influences Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) ratings. Using complex systems theory as the framework, the research questions were focused on exploring if higher levels of LEED certification led to greater HCAHPS overall hospital …

The Hospital Consumer Assessment Of Healthcare Providers And Systems And Readmissions, Sheri Matson Jan 2020

The Hospital Consumer Assessment Of Healthcare Providers And Systems And Readmissions, Sheri Matson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Patient perception of care has become a main priority in the delivery of high-quality health care. The creation of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey provided a nationally standardized method of evaluating patient perception to be incorporated in the reimbursement process defined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between HCAHPS scores and readmission rates in 2 states in the South Atlantic region of the United States. Using social construction theory, this quantitative study utilized multiple regression analysis to analyze HCAHPS scores (independent …

Relationships Between Nursing Resources, Uncompensated Care, Hospital Profitability, And Quality Of Care, Gloria Glover Jan 2019

Relationships Between Nursing Resources, Uncompensated Care, Hospital Profitability, And Quality Of Care, Gloria Glover

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The value-based purchase requirement of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act puts pressure on hospital leaders to control cost while improving quality of care. The resource dependency theory was the theoretical framework for this correlational study. Archival data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services collected from 166 acute care urban hospitals for the Fiscal Year 2016. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between nursing salaries per patient day, cost of uncompensated care as a percentage of net patient revenue, percentage of net income from patient services, and overall patient satisfaction for quality of …

One Hospital's Patient Satisfaction Plans In Response, Valerie A. Smart Shoup Jan 2015

One Hospital's Patient Satisfaction Plans In Response, Valerie A. Smart Shoup

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Recent changes in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reimbursement programs resulted in $1 billion in payments to hospitals based on Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores. Approximately 50% of the 3,000 hospitals currently receiving Medicare supplements may receive increases in reimbursement payments while 50% will receive decreases in payments. This case study explored how one hospital team in North Texas achieved high HCAHPS scores. The primary provider theory, Deming's model of plan-do-study-act (PDSA), and disruptive innovation theory framed the study. The data collection process included administrator interviews (n = 7), hospital document analysis …

Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounding: Patient Satisfaction With Nursing Communication And Decreased Hospital Readmissions, Luanne Parks Jan 2015

Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounding: Patient Satisfaction With Nursing Communication And Decreased Hospital Readmissions, Luanne Parks

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is a lack of quality communication among health care professionals and patients in the hospital setting, which can negatively impact patient satisfaction and increase hospital readmission rates. Interdisciplinary bedside rounding (IBR) is a method of rounding that uses direct communication and discussion of the patient at the bedside, and the use of IRB may improve the quality communication among health care professionals and patients. The purpose of this program outcomes evaluation project was to evaluate whether IBR increased patient satisfaction with nursing communication and if IBR decreased hospital readmission rates. The Iowa model of evidence-based practice provided a framework …
