A Proposed Mechanism For The Thermotropic Effects Of Pipradrol In The Rabbit, Stephen Franklyn Small Jan 1983

A Proposed Mechanism For The Thermotropic Effects Of Pipradrol In The Rabbit, Stephen Franklyn Small

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the present study, the influence of various drug pretreatments will be investigated in the rabbit in an attempt to (a) define the pharmacological mechanism of action of pipradrol in its mediation of hyperthermia and (b) observe the effects of these pretreatments on the behavioral effect of pipradrol. Although pipradrol is no longer of clinical utility, it is hoped that the results of this study may provide more information for its use in future studies as a pharmacological tool.

A Study Of Antimicrobial Use In A Community Hospital : The Influence Of Corrective Interventions, John Greg Pech Jan 1983

A Study Of Antimicrobial Use In A Community Hospital : The Influence Of Corrective Interventions, John Greg Pech

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

tudies in teaching and non-teaching hospitals have shown that one- quarter to one-third of all patients receive an antimicrobial (AMC) drug during their hospital stay." 1-30 Many of these patients (ranging from 30 to 60%), particularly those on the surgical services, have no definite evidence of infection.

Inquiry regarding the use of AMC drugs can be traced back more than two decades. In 1961, the Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities in its Professional Activity Study (CPHA-PAS) surveyed 24 hospitals." They found that approximately 27% of all patients were given an AMC drug; however, it was estimated by PAS that …

Enteric Infections In Stockton, California : With Special Reference To The Genus Campylobacter, Tom Edward Hathorn Jan 1983

Enteric Infections In Stockton, California : With Special Reference To The Genus Campylobacter, Tom Edward Hathorn

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the last two or three years, the three largest hospitals in Stockton (St. Joseph’s, Dameron and San Joaquin General Hospitals) have modified their procedures to include the search for Campylobacter. On the other hand, the incidence of Yersinia in California is unknown, as most clinical laboratories do not specifically culture for it. There have been only a few reports of Yersinia in this state (personal communication of Dennis Ferrero, Director of the San Joaquin County Public Health Laboratory). This study has a threefold purpose: to investigate the incidences of Campylobacter and Yersinia, especially in relation to the incidence of …

Evaluation Of Drug Information Retrieval Services For Selected Investigational Antineoplastic Agents, Ali Al-Hasan A Al-Hefzi Jan 1983

Evaluation Of Drug Information Retrieval Services For Selected Investigational Antineoplastic Agents, Ali Al-Hasan A Al-Hefzi

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The availability of drug information that is useful to clinicians is an important need for those responsible for medication use in patients. Physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and patients routinely require access to relevant information related to rational drug therapy. The need for rapid access to relevant information has become increasingly important as the science, technology, and specialization within health care expand. Because of this expansion the literature has increased not only in size but also in complexity.

The term drug information (e.g., used in drug information service, drug information center or drug information specialist) is defined as "knowledge of facts or …

The Effect Of Emg And Skin Temperature Biofeedback On Essential Hypertension, Michael Harness Jan 1983

The Effect Of Emg And Skin Temperature Biofeedback On Essential Hypertension, Michael Harness

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, behavioral approaches for the treatment of essential hypertension have received considerable research attention. Biofeedback and relaxation training have been the behavioral treatments most often used for lowering high blood pressure. The present study compared the separate use of EMG and skin temperature biofeedback in treating essential hypertension, with a combined approach utilizing both types of feedback. Twenty-one hyper- tensive subjects were randomly assigned to one of the three experimental conditions: (a) EMG biofeedback, (b) skin temperature biofeedback, or (c) both EMG and skin temperature biofeedback. In addition, a control group consisting of patients randomly chosen from a …

Increasing Staff Use Of Sign Language, Melanie Hepworth Neville Jan 1983

Increasing Staff Use Of Sign Language, Melanie Hepworth Neville

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effectiveness of two procedures, a visual cue and performance posting, to modify the use of sign language by psychiatric technicians. The visual cue was first introduced alone, then paired with performance posting to encourage staff use of sign language with the developmentally disabled children in their charge. Application of the visual cue alone produced little change in staff sign useage. The visual cue plus performance posting condition increased staff use of sign language during mealtimes. Four weeks of follow-up data indicated that the use of sign language remained at a level well above baseline.

The Effect Of Special Packaging On The Medication Compliance Of Hypertensive Patients, Renée R. Young Jan 1983

The Effect Of Special Packaging On The Medication Compliance Of Hypertensive Patients, Renée R. Young

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study tested the effectiveness of special packaging in increasing the medication compliance of hypertensive patients in the outpatient clinic at San Joaquin General Hospital. Seventy patients were randomly assigned to an experimental and control group. After a 6 week treatment period, the mean compliance estimates for the experimental and control groups (xl = 68.59%, x2 = 48.67%) were compared and found to be significantly different (t = 2.46, df = 33, p < .05). In addition, a statistically significant negative correlation was found between compliance and blood pressure (r = -0.51, p ~ .01).

Differences Of Selected Performance Parameters Of Dominant And Nondominant Legs Of Soccer Players, Bruce M. Spaulding Jan 1983

Differences Of Selected Performance Parameters Of Dominant And Nondominant Legs Of Soccer Players, Bruce M. Spaulding

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The main problem of this study was to determine if a significant strength difference existed between the mirror muscles of six muscle groups in the dominant and nondominant legs of University of the Pacific male soccer players at differing contraction speeds as measured by the Cybex II Isokinetic Dynometer.
