Open Fractures: A Review, Alex Telis
UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal
Open fractures occur most commonly in men aged more than 50 years, which may result in lifetime costs for patients and healthcare systems. In the past 5 years, high-quality evidence for direct treatment of these fractures has increased. The expedient administration of intravenous antibiotics continues to be one of the most predictive factors of infection prevention. Open fractures are complicated injuries to classify owing to multiple factors that will be reviewed in the current study: severity of fracture and soft-tissue injury, thoroughness of debridement, time to initial treatment, modality of antibiotic delivery, and timing of definitive fracture fixation and soft-tissue …

Background: Residents frequently use the internet to find material on fellowship programs. The Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) website serves as a central hub for information on an orthopaedic trauma fellowship (OTF). This study aims to evaluate the accessibility, content, and perceived importance of OTF websites.
Methods: We reviewed the 49 OTFs accredited by the OTA fellowship database as of January 2014. We searched for corresponding OTF websites by using the provided OTA hyperlinks and conducting a separate Google search of program location and institution. Links to websites of general orthopaedic programs were not counted. Content of OTF websites was analyzed …

Background: It remains unclear whether pediatric trauma, including fracture, occurs more frequently at a certain time of the year. We developed a database based on the University of New Mexico orthopaedics consult log (OCL) with the aim of determining whether pediatric fractures have a seasonal predilection.
Methods: The OCL for 2009 and 2010, representing a total of 2385 patient visits, was reviewed, and data on patients who were 17 years of age or younger who were treated for trauma were collected. The months and seasons of the year in which the trauma occurred were recorded.
Results: The OCL for 2009 …
