Achilles Tendon Ruptures In Two Male Athletes In Ncaa Division I: Report Of Two Cases, Lisa Hardy, Michele Bliss, Garyn Worrall, James Slauterbeck

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Major tendon ruptures are rare, with an Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) being the most frequent type. Reported cases most commonly involve male recreational athletes who have increased body mass indexes and are between ages 30 and 50 years. We describe two male athletes in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association who underwent surgical repair for treating an ATR associated with running-related activities. In contrast to other cases, both patients had normal body mass indexes. These two cases identify high-level athletes who underwent operative Achilles tendon repair and returned to their sport at a similar level or high level …

Benign masses are not uncommon near the Achilles tendon of the ankle. However, the occurrence of angiomyomas or glomus tumors in the region has rarely been reported. We describe two patients, a 44-year-old woman and 44-yearold man, who presented with a tender mass posterior to the Achilles tendon. Excision led to successful removal of the lesion in both cases. Results of histological examinations revealed an angiomyoma and glomus tumor in the woman and man, respectively. Although rare, the presence of these tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis of masses near the Achilles tendon.

Splinting Method For Preventing Thermal Injuries In Patients With Malleolar Fractures Of The Ankle After Operative Treatment Performed Under Regional Anesthesia, Alex Telis, Katherine J. Gavin, Heather M. Menzer, E Brooke Baker, Richard A. Miller Jan 2016

Miller

After performing open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for treating malleolar fractures of the ankle, surgeons typically use plaster splints during postoperative recovery of patients. Use of regional anesthesia during ORIF has been noted as a risk factor for burns in patients using plaster splints, possibly owing to inability to feel pain after undergoing regional block. We describe a successful postoperative splinting technique used for preventing thermal injuries in this patient population. We reviewed medical records of patients between 2011 and 2013 at our institution with malleolar ankle fractures who had underwent ORIF under general anesthesia, peripheral nerve block, or …

Postoperative Deep Vein Thrombosis And Pulmonary Embolism After Ankle Fusion In A Patient With Hemophilia A: A Case Report, Christopher P. Bankhead, Michael J. Hopson, Richard A. Miller Jan 2016

Postoperative Deep Vein Thrombosis And Pulmonary Embolism After Ankle Fusion In A Patient With Hemophilia A: A Case Report, Christopher P. Bankhead, Michael J. Hopson, Richard A. Miller

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and subsequent pulmonary embolism (PE) are uncommon postoperative complications of operative procedures for treating injuries of the foot and ankle. Because the disorder of hemophilia A prevents blood clotting and increases bleeding, patients with this condition have been even less likely to develop DVT and PE. We present a 36-year-old man with hemophilia A in whom operative ankle fusion for treating hemophilic arthropathy of the left ankle led to DVT and PE. After decreasing dosage of antihemophilic medication and administering enoxaparin, the symptoms improved and the patient was discharged from the hospital on postoperative day 5. …
