In 2000-2001, the frequency of metritis cases due to Klebsiella pneumoniae was investigated in Thoroughbred breeding mares in the Marmara region of Turkey, where most racehorses are reared. In addition, Thoroughbred stallions from the breeding centre in the İzmit district were examined for the presence of K. pneumoniae. Biotypes and capsule types of the isolates were detected, and their antibiotic susceptibilities were determined. Intrauterine swabs taken from 56 mares with metritis, and semen samples and swabs of urethral fossa from 27 stallions were investigated. K. pneumoniae was isolated from 13 (23.2%) mares and 2 (7.4%) stallions. Biotyping of the isolates …

Pregnancy Diagnosis In Mares By Determination Of Oestradiol-17-B Hormone In Faeces, Muzaffer Çelebi̇, Mürsel Demi̇rel

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of the present study was the confirmation of pregnancy diagnosis in mares by the determination of oestradiol-17 b in faeces. The research was carried out on 30 cyclic mares. Faeces samples were collected through pregnancy at monthly intervals. The faeces samples of pregnant and non-pregnant mares contained a mean oestradiol-17 b concentration of 9.39 ± 2.63 and 7.70 ± 2.00 ng/g, respectively in the 4^{th} month of gestation. From the 5^{th} month of pregnancy the oestradiol-17 b concentration in pregnant mares was significantly higher than in non-pregnant mares. Oestradiol-17 b levels were estimated to be 71.20 ± 8.00 …

The objectives of this study were to compare some haemodynamic and clinical parameters and the analgesic, sedative effects of lidocaine and a lidocaine-meperidine combination for caudal epidural analgesia in mares. This study was performed on 12 thoroughbred mares aged 13-24 years. Time to onset of analgesia in the combination group (6.67 ± 0.42 min) was significantly (P < 0.01) lower than in the lidocaine group (12.17 ± 1.05 min). However, duration of analgesia was significantly (P < 0.001) longer for the combination group (162.67 ± 5.67 min) than for the lidocaine group (109.33 ± 3.29 min). Heart and respiratory rates, rectal temperature, pH, pO_2, pCO_2, HCO_3, BE, PCV, THb and O_2Hb values measured before and after administrations in both groups were not significantly different. In conclusion, the combination of lidocaine-meperidine produced analgesia of quicker onset and longer duration than did lidocaine administered alone for caudal epidural analgesia in mares.
