Sea pens or pennatulaceans (Phylum Cnidaria, Order Pennatulacea) are colonial marine octocorals that typically anchor themselves into soft sediment. They make large colonies from the intertidal zone down to the abyssal plain that provide an important structural habitat to other organisms. In the present study, the morphological and histological characteristics of the dominant species of Virgularia gustaviana, the dominant sea pen species of the Persian Gulf, were surveyed. Samples of V. gustaviana were collected along the coastal intertidal zone of the Soru and Bandar Abbas beaches, located at the northeast of the Persian Gulf. The sea pens were then fixed …

The Effect Of The Metabolic Syndrome On The Histological Structure Of The Testes Tissue And The Sperm Morphology In The Rats, Ayşe Alkandurur, Şadi̇ye Kum

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of metabolic syndrome on spermatozoon morphology and histological, histochemical, histomorphometric changes in the testes. Twenty-four male Sprague Dawley rats (60 day-olds) were used for this purpose. The rats in the control group were fed only water and rat food, while the rats in the experimental group were fed with water containing 20% D-fructose and rats food for 16 weeks with ad libitum. At the end of the experimental period, the testes and epididymis of the rats were removed. The testes were embedded in paraffin by performing the necessary histological procedure. In …

Some Histological Reveals On Reproduction Of One Of The Lessepsian Species, Nemipterus Randalli In Antalya (Turkey), Mehmet Rüştü Özen

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the reproduction of Nemipterus randalli, one of the lessepsian fish catch from the Gulf of Antalya, Turkey was interpreted histologically. Regarding the fish used in this study (N = 1715), it is noteworthy to mention that male individuals are larger than females. The first sexual maturity in males was determined 17 cm TL and 60 g in BW, whereas 13 cm TL and 25 g BW in females. Females reached sexual maturity at age I+ and males at the age of II+. Seven different stages (O1-O7) were identified in oocyte maturation in the ovaries. The spawning time …
