Pastırma is a high value, traditional, dry cured, and edible coated meat product. For economic and sociocultural reasons, it is important to know which meat species are used in pastırma. The present study aims to carry out the determination of the meat species in pastırma. A total of 144 pastırma samples were collected from different stores. After genomic DNA isolation, the total DNAs obtained were subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using specially designed novel primers amplifying the mitochondrial ND4 (MTND4) gene region, specific for cattle (Bos taurus), water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), horse (Equus caballus), and donkey (Equus asinus) species. …

Natural herbal products contain different compounds that can modulate immune and inflammatory diseases. This investigation aimed to examine the influence of Pistacia atlantica aqueous extract on cellular and humoral immunity in mice following the exposure to sheep red blood cells (SRBCs). For this purpose, male BALB/c mice (n = 40) were randomly assigned into 4 equivalent groups. The animals received 1 × 109 SRBCs in complete Freund?s adjuvant (CFA) intraperitoneally 3 times with two-week intervals. Five days after the final injection, blood samples were taken from the animals. Additionally, 1 × 109 SRBCs were also injected into the mice?s left …

The objective of this study was to assess the changes in serum glucose, beta-hydroxybutyric acid (ß-HBA), and nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) levels in Damascus dairy goats fed niacin (Nia) and methionine (Met) during late gestation and early postpartum period. A total of 75 dairy goats at 105th day of gestation were divided into 3 groups as control (no supplementation), Nia (20 g/kg Nia), and Met (2.5 g/kg Met) groups. The dietary treatments continued until parturition. Dairy goats fed dietary Nia had greater serum glucose levels on day 125 of gestation compared to the other dietary treatments (P < 0.05). On day 135 of pregnancy, serum glucose levels were higher in Met group than control group (P < 0.05). Serum ß-HBA levels decreased on days 135 and 145 in dairy goats fed Nia than those in control group. Dietary Nia and Met lowered serum ß-HBA levels on day 10 postpartum compared to control group (P < 0.05). Serum NEFA levels decreased (P < 0.05) on days 135 and 145 in dairy goats fed Nia supplemented ration than those in control group. Serum NEFA levels d 10 postpartum were different among the groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary Nia and Met supplementation improved serum glucose levels on day 125 of gestation while decreasing ß-HBA and NEFA levels during late gestation and early postpartum period in Damascus dairy goats under the conditions of present study.

Comparison Of Different Eggshell Thickness Measurement Methods, Abdulkadi̇r Arslan, Umut Sami̇ Yamak

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to examine how various methods affect the results of eggshell thickness measurements. Direct and indirect measurements were performed on 700 table eggs which were daily collected from the same flock. The shell thickness of the eggs was calculated according to a logarithm which uses egg weight. Eggs with a specific gravity of higher than 0.80 g/cm³ were classified as thick-shelled, whereas the others were categorized as thin-shelled. After determining the shell thickness of the eggs by an ultrasound gauge, all of the eggs were broken, the shells were separated, and the shell thickness of each egg …

First, the morphological characteristics of diploid and triploid Pacific oysters C. gigas farmed in the Black Sea were studied. Allometric ratios of weight (W, g) and shell height (H, mm) of oysters were obtained, which are described by the equations W$_{2n}$ = 4 × 10$^{-4}$ × H$_{2n}$ $^{2.56}$, R2 = …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Acute lung injury is a clinical symptom that can cause morbidity, acute respiratory failure, and risk of developing pneumonia. Mast cells are found more commonly in places where antigens can enter the body, such as skin and respiratory and digestive systems, which enables them to be among the first groups of cell to act in the defense mechanism against foreign matter entry. Resveratrol is an active substance which is found in the structure of many plants and which can be used against pathogens due to its antimicrobial effect. The aim of our study is to show the degranulation and heterogeneity …

The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of 10 different lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains isolated from local food sources of animal origin against 4 Enterobacter cloacae isolates obtained from clinical cases and determine their adhesion potentials to intestinal epithelial cells. In this study, all Enterobacter cloacae isolates (P3, P4, P5, P7) identified with the BD Phoenix automation system were detected to form biofilm with both Congo red agar and Microtiter plate methods. Amoxicillinclavulanate, cefuroxime, and ampicillin resistance was determined in all isolates. It was determined that LAB strains producing exopolysaccharide (EPS) were able …

Genotyping Results Of Salmonella Infantis As A Food Poisoning Agent In Turkey Between2013 And 2017, Si̇bel Kizil

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study is to define the genotyping relationship between 31 Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Infantis (S. Infantis) strains, which were the most isolated and identified causes of food poisoning between 2013 and 2017 in Turkey. These isolated strains were studied with the DiversiLab System (repetitive sequence-based PCR; rep-PCR; bioMerieux, France) and traditional serotyping for the identification of S. Infantis was also carried out. Totally, 31 S. Infantis isolates were genotyped. DNA was extracted from each isolate using the Microbial DNA Isolation Kit as well as rep-PCR. The dendrogram shows the diversity of the observed samples contained …
