Background/aim: The retinol level and retinol delivery to the placenta may vary depending on various factors involving the mother and newborn. The present study evaluates the factors affecting retinol levels in newborns and the transplacental retinol passage in preterm newborns. Materials and methods: In this prospective cohort study, the retinol and retinol binding protein (RBP) in the umbilical cord blood of 44 preterm infants with a gestation age of

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between placental localisation, birth weight, and foetal sex. It also evaluates umbilical artery Doppler parameters and their relationship with placental localisation. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective study of 500 healthy pregnant women who gave birth at our university. All women had undergone a detailed ultrasound and Doppler examination at 20-23 weeks. The ultrasonography results of the patients were examined retrospectively. Foetal biometry, birth weight, and umbilical artery Doppler parameters were recorded and compared according to placental localisation. Results: Birth weight was significantly higher in foetuses with anteriorly located …

Structural Changes Of Placenta In Preeclamptic Patients: Light And Electron Microscopic Study, Reda Awadallah Saleh, Mohamed Abdel Monem Dkhil Jan 2008

Structural Changes Of Placenta In Preeclamptic Patients: Light And Electron Microscopic Study, Reda Awadallah Saleh, Mohamed Abdel Monem Dkhil

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background: Preeclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period and affects both the mother and the unborn baby. It is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. The study was designed to investigate the histological and ultrastructural changes in placentas from pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia. Methods: Paraffin sections from placenta biopsies were prepared for light microscopic examination. For ultrastructural examination, biopsies were prepared and examined by digital scanning electron microscope. Results: Light microscopic examinations showed that the nuclei of syncytiotrophoblast layer were aggregated into clusters …

Placental Heat Shock Protein 70 Overexpression Confers Resistance Against Oxidative Stress In Preeclampsia, Ekambaram Padmini, Bose Vijaya Geetha Jan 2008

Placental Heat Shock Protein 70 Overexpression Confers Resistance Against Oxidative Stress In Preeclampsia, Ekambaram Padmini, Bose Vijaya Geetha

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aims: Preeclampsia is a hypertensive disorder of human pregnancy and a leading cause of premature delivery and fetal growth retardation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), both constitutive (HSC70) and induced (HSP70) forms, along with oxidative stress status in the placental tissues of normotensive (control group) and preeclamptic pregnancies. Materials and Methods: Placental samples were collected after delivery from normotensive pregnancies and preeclamptic patients (n = 20, each). Lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitrite and nitrate levels, along with antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) …
