To evaluate the protective effect of selenium on intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury due to intussusception. Materials and methods: Forty Wistar albino rats were allocated to 4 equal groups (n = 10). After anesthetization, 2 cm of intestinal segment, 20 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve, was removed in the control group (CG). In the intussusception group (ING), intussusception was performed 20 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve by pushing the proximal intestinal segment distally with a stylet, and 2 cm of intestinal segment was removed 4 h later. Intussusception was reduced and a 2 cm segment was removed after another 4 …

Gastrointestinal system (GIS) cancers account for a significant percentage of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Free radicals may play a role in the development of GIS cancers at various stages. The goal of this study was to analyze the relationship between gastroesophageal cancer and plasma levels of vitamin A and vitamin E, a significant part of antioxidant defense. Materials and methods: Twenty-six patients with gastroesophageal cancer diagnosed by endoscopy and histopathologic examination and 26 healthy volunteer subjects were included in this study. Plasma vitamin A and vitamin E levels were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography using a commercially available kit. Results: …

To evaluate the protective effect of tryptophan on an experimentally produced hypoxic myocardial injury via biochemical and pathological parameters. Materials and methods: A total of 26 rabbits were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 (n = 9) was only exposed to hypoxia. Group 2 (n = 10) was exposed to hypoxia and received L-tryptophan (200 mg/kg per day, orally for 5 days). Group 3 (n = 7) was the control group. Before the hypoxic injury and after the delivery of the medication, serum samples were taken for troponin-I, creatine kinase myocardial isoenzymes (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide …

Intestinal obstruction (IO) induces bacterial translocation due to failure of the intestinal barrier function. Following bacterial overgrowth, its degradation products play a decisive role in the development of systemic septic complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) on bacterial translocation and intestinal damage in an IO model in rats. Materials and methods: Complete IO was created in the distal ileum of rats by a single 4-0 silk suture. A total of 21 Wistar albino rats were randomized into 3 groups: Group 1, Sham (n = 7); Group 2, IO (n …

Free radicals are an important factor in the etiopathogenesis of colitis and may increase oxidative damage. The antioxidant vitamin C efficiently scavenges free oxygen radicals. The present study aimed to investigate the probable protective effects of vitamin C on oxidative injury in rats in which colitis was experimentally induced with acetic acid. Materials and methods: This study was conducted with rats for a period of 7 days. Group 1 intrarectally received a placebo (0.9% NaCl) and group 2 intrarectally received 2 mL of 5% acetic acid (AA) and the placebo. Group 3 intrarectally received 2 mL of 5% AA and …

Inflammatory and immune cells, such as eosinophils, macrophages, and neutrophils, generate more reactive oxygen species in patients with asthma than they do in healthy individuals, and oxygen radicals contribute to tissue injury in asthma. We aimed to measure total oxidant status (TOS) and antioxidant status (TAS) in order to assess oxidative and antioxidative capacity. Eosinophil cationic protein (ECP), total IgE, and eosinophils (%) were measured to evaluate the level of inflammation. Materials and methods: The study included 56 non-smoking asthma patients that were followed-up at the respiratory disease and allergy outpatient clinics, where they received ongoing treatment for 5 months …
