Health Impacts Of Global Climate Change With A Focus On Women’S Health, Mikhaila Samz
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background: Global climate change has been occurring at an unprecedented rate and is damaging to human health. With women having specific health care needs, this literature review examines the relationship between women’s health (including maternal health) and global climate change through subtopics including global temperature and heat waves, carbon dioxide emissions and air pollution, natural disasters and extreme weather events, malnutrition and food insecurity, water supply and resource scarcity, and changing infectious disease patterns.

Trauma Informed Nursing Care For Women Who Are Marginalized: An Educational Workshop, Jenna Fadlalla
Trauma Informed Nursing Care For Women Who Are Marginalized: An Educational Workshop, Jenna Fadlalla
Theses and Graduate Projects
Traumatic events profoundly affect both the physical and emotional health of a woman who endures the event. Gender, socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic disparities in rates of trauma exist showing that women who are marginalized are at a higher risk for trauma. Nurses are privileged to provide care for these women in their greatest times of need, yet despite the intimate relationship between nurses and their patients, trauma is a topic that remains largely unaddressed by the field of nursing. Because trauma can have such a profound effect on health, it is essential for nurses of all specialties and at all …

Creating Community With Homeless And Marginally Housed Women, Judy Schlaefer
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project is to create a weekly Drop-In Center where Homeless and Marginally Housed (HMH) women receive support, respite, and respect in a safe, welcoming environment. Homeless and Marginally Housed (HMH) women have unique needs due to daily struggles with disenfranchisement which include barriers to health services, battering, poor transportation, lack of recreation and education, neglect, and institutionalized poverty. The impetus for the Drop-In Center was to offer respite from the harsh environment created by the institutionalized violence against HMH women who deserve significant emotional and social support, nutrition, and respite. The transculrural nurse will be focused …

Caring As Catalyst; A Model For Health Possibilities, Brenda A. Becker
Theses and Graduate Projects
This graduate field project presents a conceptual model based on the theoretical frameworks of Brentano, Frankl, Rogers, Merry, Benner, and Wrubel and is designed to facilitate the life journey to more complex levels. The model has a foundation in chaos theory and in the search for meaning. Key concepts of catalyst, presence, polarization, and participation are defined and described. Presence is defined at three levels: physical, psychological, and therapeutic. Participation is defined as a sharing of the life and experience between nurse and person. Polarization, or change in pattern, is also defined at three levels: active, collaborative, and passive. The …
Does Body Mass Index (Bmi) Affect The Prevalence Of Pap Smears?, Debra Maas
Does Body Mass Index (Bmi) Affect The Prevalence Of Pap Smears?, Debra Maas
Theses and Graduate Projects
Background The pap smear test is highly effective at detecting pre-cancerous and cancerous cervical cells. However, only 68.3 percent of women in the U.S. received a Pap smear in 2001. Previous research studies have shown that overweight and obese women are less likely to receive routine pap smears. This is especially concerning because obesity is a risk factor for cervical cancer Methods A retrospective review of data was conducted from the medical records of 90 women, 18 years of age or older, who were seen by the researcher at SMDC clinics in Deer River and Remer, Minnesota from February 2003 …
