Cryopreservation Of Boar Semen: Where We Are, Panida Chanapiwat, Kampon Kaeoket

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The preservation of boar semen can be divided intotwo methods as follows: fresh boar semen and frozen boar semen. The first method is only to preserve the sperm for a short period, ranging from 3 to 10 days and depends on the semen extender used, however, its benefit is only in use for artificial insemination on a particular farm or for a short distant transportation. The latter method has been developed in order to keep the semen of superior genetic boars for long distant transportation or preservation of their genetics for future production or to set upa new herd in …

Effects Of Centrifugation And Removal Of Seminal Plasma On Motility Of Fresh Boar Sperm, Olivia Bury, Victoria Mcrae, Jose Len, Kate Plush, Roy N. Kirkwood Dec 2017

Effects Of Centrifugation And Removal Of Seminal Plasma On Motility Of Fresh Boar Sperm, Olivia Bury, Victoria Mcrae, Jose Len, Kate Plush, Roy N. Kirkwood

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Extended semen from 6 boars was centrifuged and then gently resuspended (CR), had the supernatant decanted to remove residual seminal plasma and resuspended in new extender (CD), or served as non-treated controls. Measures of sperm motility were assessed immediately after centrifugation and then every 24 h until 96 h using a computer-assisted sperm analyser. Total and progressive sperm motilities were reduced (P<0.05) by 48 h in CD. Total motility was not affected in CR sperm but progressive motility was reduced (P<0.05) at 72 h. Changes with time were very similar for VSL, VAP, VCL and BCF. Control values remained relatively stable but VCL, VSL, VAP and ALH were lower within minutes of centrifugation and decanting of CD sperm. Both CR and CD treatment values for all variables were lower (P<0.05) from 3 d. These data indicate that centrifugation can negatively affect boar sperm motility and that even the small amount of residual seminal plasma in fresh-extended boar semen has a protective role. Sperm age-associated reduced motility can be countered with caffeine.

Effects Of Environmental Factors, Ages And Breeds On Semen Characteristics In Thai Indigenous Chickens: A One-Year Study, Pornjit Sonseeda, Thevin Vongpralub, Banyat Laopaiboon

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Several reports on the semen characteristics of domestic fowl have indicated that environmental factors, breed and age significantly affect semen quality. There is, however, a paucity of data on effects of environmental factor, breed and age on semen characteristic in Thai indigenous chickens. The aims of the present study were to investigate the effects of annual ambient temperature and humidity, local breeds (i.e. Lueng hang kaow, Pradoo hang dam and Chee), and ages (10 and 18 months) on sperm production and semen quality among Thai native cocks. Thirty-six Thai native cocks were housed under natural environmental conditions, and semen was …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

While the use of frozen-thawed semen has been hampered by poor cryopreservability of equine sperm, the technique of choice in equine practice remains artificial insemination (AI) using cold storage semen. This study examined the effect of cold storage on semen quality and pregnancy rate after AI. In experiment I, ejaculates were collected from 3 stallions of proven fertility and then diluted to a final concentration of 25-50 x 106 sperm/ml. After transportation, the semen was then divided into two aliquots. The first part of semen was centrifuged to partially remove the seminal plasma, while the remaining was left intact with …
