The incidence of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease and other Polyglutamine Diseases is projected to dramatically increase throughout the developed world, and yet the pathology of these diseases remains poorly understood. According to Lynne Weilart (2013), in her article on the reasons why people seek out therapy, trauma is the number one reason people attend counseling. Many different trauma-informed approaches are designed specifically to address the consequences of trauma and to facilitate healing. Some of these approaches are as follows: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT);Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT); Trauma Systems Therapy (TST); Trauma Assessment Pathway (TAP); and Attachment, Self-Regulation, and Competency (ARC) (de Arellano, Danielson, Ko, & Sprauge, 2008). The structures of the spinal cord and vertebral column are designed to provide flexibility, while still providing ample protection for the spinal cord deep within. While it does offer remarkable protection against most routine trauma, the spinal cord is still vulnerable to high-force etiologies of trauma and may become damaged as a result. Burns are complex injuries that trigger the stress response and result in increased blood glucose. Diabetes mellitus, an endocrine disorder with abnormal glucose regulation, can significantly alter the risk for burns and the treatment of burns. Pre-existing diabetes mellitus complicates burn treatments and healing ability. Diabetes mellitus may also develop directly from an unregulated stress response to the burn. Folate has been known as an important vitamin for several decades. It is vital in development and epigenetics and is especially known for its involvement in the prevention of neural tube defects in newborns. Due to this ability, a synthetic form of folate, folic acid, was mandated by the government to be reinforced into cereals and grains. Research suggests pre-pregnancy obesity is associated with an increased risk of macrosomia in the newborn. Since women are expected to gain weight during pregnancy, the standard recommendation of weight loss for obesity is not ideal for this population. In this systematic review of the literature regarding interventions for maternal obesity to reduce fetal macrosomia, 149 articles were screened using three different databases to identify recent randomized controlled trials related to this topic. A total of 11 full text articles were analyzed and included in the review. The articles addressed nutritional, lifestyle, and pharmacological interventions. Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria is an accelerated aging disorder caused by a de novo point mutation in the LMNA gene which codes for an intermediate filament of the nuclear lamina called lamin A. The point mutation at c.1824C>T causes a 50-amino-acid deletion that removes the binding site for Zmpste24, a metalloprotease responsible for defarnesylating prelamin A and producing mature lamin A. Without the ability to be defarnesylated, the mutated protein, called progerin, is more lipophilic and has a myriad of cytotoxic effects. Fluorescent deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) stains that permeate cells are used to observe cellular processes in vivo, making them valuable tools. For the proposal of a new stain, ethidium bromide, cyanine dyes, Hoechst stains, macarpine, DAPI and DRAQ5 are first examined. Features contributing to DNA binding mechanism, toxicity, and cell membrane transport are analyzed for these compounds. The mechanism of DNA binding contributes to the toxicity of the compound. For dyes with well-understood transport mechanisms, multi-drug protein transporters are vital players, though this remains an area for ongoing research as many mechanisms are not well studied.
