Gender Differences In Marijuana-Related Problems Among Those Who Self-Reported Daily Smoking And Marijuana Use, Justin Ho

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

In 2012, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported about 5.2% of its respondents using tobacco and marijuana, with strong evidence of increasing marijuana use among tobacco users.1 While smoking cigarettes has been shown to cause lung cancer,2 additional studies associate habitual marijuana smoking with abnormal airway tissue histology, impeded airway conductance,3 decreased memory, psychomotor speed, and manual dexterity.4 Cigarette smoking and marijuana use are shown to have similar withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, and depression,2,5 meaning that this example of polysubstance dependence could become a valid public health concern, especially with …

Identifying Factors Underlying The Decision For Genetic Carrier Screening Among Women In Montgomery County, Sowon Kim Jan 2020

Identifying Factors Underlying The Decision For Genetic Carrier Screening Among Women In Montgomery County, Sowon Kim

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

As medical scientific technologies evolve, numerous medical tests help not only physicians with their clinical judgment, but also patients by empowering them with more knowledge of their own health. An example is Genetic Carrier Screening (GCS) [1-2]. Genetic Carrier Screening (GCS) is a genetic test that allows patients to find out if they carry genes for certain genetic disorders. The results of the test enable patients to make changes to their family planning decisions and prenatal care when appropriate and allow them the opportunity to seek further medical and social support [3]. The clinical utility of GCS is evident in …

Perceptions Of Fracture Location, Breanna Dominguez Jan 2020

Perceptions Of Fracture Location, Breanna Dominguez

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

OBJECTIVE: Aseptic non-union is a significant complication in approximately 5% of long bone fractures1. Bone stimulation devices are used before surgical intervention and can have favorable results if accurately placed. The objective of this study is to determine accuracy of clinician fracture localization based solely on viewing radiographs.

METHODS: A transverse diaphyseal fracture was induced in a cadaveric radius and tibia using a bone saw and osteotome; fractures were not apparent from incision or soft tissue. The sample included 20 physicians and 16 pre-clinical medical students. Participants used reference anteroposterior (AP) and lateral radiographs to determine fracture location and placed …

The Effects Of Daily Sunlight Levels On Suicide Rates, Amna Amin Jan 2020

The Effects Of Daily Sunlight Levels On Suicide Rates, Amna Amin

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

The correlation between sunlight and mental health has been long studied and is even involved in the development of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), with subsequent development of light therapy for affected individuals. This points towards the question of the effects of varying levels of daily sunlight in the United States on rates of suicide – a reflection of the extreme state of suboptimal mental health. I have ventured to study this question, using publicly available data on the daily sunlight levels in various states in the U.S. during each month of the year and the rates of suicide in those …

The goal of this investigation is to analyze data that influences premature death rates in Virginian counties. Specifically, I am looking at how the rates compare between rural and urban Virginian counties in 2020. In addition, I am analyzing how the premature death rates correlates with low birthweights, with air pollution, with preventable hospital stays, and with children in poverty and see how these variables predict the variance in premature death rates by county. I am using data from the County Health Rankings website. They gathered their data via surveys, the National Vital Statistics System, the CDC health tracking network, …

Long-Term Survival Of Bladder Cancer Metastatic To Femoral Neck Treated With Chemotherapy, Radiation, And Arthroplasty: A Case Report, John Defant, Scott Huff, Joseph D. Henningsen, Anil Krishnamurthy

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Case: A 64-year-old male suffered a pathologic left femoral neck fracture. Biopsy demonstrated metastatic urothelial cancer with a non-muscle invasive bladder cancer primary confirmed by cystoscopy. Patient underwent hemiarthroplasty, chemotherapy, radiation, and eventually, a conversion to total hip arthroplasty. Today, over a decade from initial surgery, the patient remains alive and highly functional. To our knowledge, this is the only report of bone metastatic bladder cancer with over 10-year survival. Conclusion: Bladder cancer metastatic to bone has a 5-year survival rate of 3%. Surgical resection of metastasis with reconstruction may confer a survival benefit in bony oligometastatic bladder cancer.

Do Medical Students' Assessments Of A Patient's Pain Vary Significantly With Gender And Year Of Medical Training?, Catherine Phamduy Jan 2020

Do Medical Students' Assessments Of A Patient's Pain Vary Significantly With Gender And Year Of Medical Training?, Catherine Phamduy

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Chronic pain is a common ailment among US adults and can lead to high cost of healthcare when not treated effectively. Unfortunately, studies show that characteristics of the patient population and physician may also influence their treatment of patient pain. Increased years of medical training is associated with a decline in empathy, which may be measurable by a decline in physician’s assessment of patient’s pain. Doctors with the least experience tend to underestimate their patient’s pain. However, very little is known about medical students’ assessment of patient-reported pain. The objective is to determine the significant differences in medical students’ perceptions …

Universal Health Coverage And Hiv In Hispanic America, Jenna Frantz Jan 2020

Universal Health Coverage And Hiv In Hispanic America, Jenna Frantz

Scholarship in Medicine - All Papers

Objective: This study analyzes differences between HIV statistics in Hispanic American countries that have passed UHC legislation versus those that have not passed UHC legislation. In 2017, 0.4% of the population of Latin America and 1.2% of the population of the Caribbean was living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).1 Because of these high rates of HIV in Hispanic America, as well as the lethality of HIV if untreated, HIV statistics and treatment outcomes in Hispanic America are of great concern. Relationships between HIV statistics and Universal Health Coverage (UHC) legislation could serve as a metric for UHC performance in Hispanic …
