Effect Of Alcohol Consumption On Cognitive Decline Among Mexican Adults, Silvia Mejia-Arango, Ihsan Salloum, Gladys E. Maestre Mar 2024

Effect Of Alcohol Consumption On Cognitive Decline Among Mexican Adults, Silvia Mejia-Arango, Ihsan Salloum, Gladys E. Maestre

Research Symposium

Background: Studies on the association between alcohol use and cognitive impairment have yielded controversial results suggesting a reduced risk of dementia in drinkers vs. nondrinkers. We aimed to examine the effect of alcohol use on cognitive trajectories among Mexican adults aged 50 and over.

Methods: Data are from 5,898 cognitively normal individuals (2,512 men and 3,386 women) from the Mexican Health and Aging Study (MHAS) with a mean age of 59 years (50-90 years) at baseline (2001) and followed-up after 11 years (2012). The Cross-Cultural Cognitive Examination was the cognitive battery measuring verbal memory, visual memory, attention, and …

Alcohol Worsens Bipolar Disorder: Fact Or Myth?, Kushal Seni, Pooja A. Chawla Jan 2024

Alcohol Worsens Bipolar Disorder: Fact Or Myth?, Kushal Seni, Pooja A. Chawla

Research Symposium

Bipolar disorder is a chronic and complex psychiatric condition characterized by alternating episodes of mania and depression. The suffering person’s quality of life, behaviour, and mood are all deeply impacted. Although drinking alcohol is a typical practise among those who have bipolar disorder, little is known about how it affects the illness. The objective of this paper is to give an overview of how alcohol affects bipolar disorder. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that can cause mood fluctuations and make bipolar disorder symptoms stronger. Alcohol may at first give off an instantaneous sensation of excitement, but over time, …

Unraveling The Mechanisms By Which Smoking And Alcohol Alter Pancreatic Cancer Pathogenesis, Poornima Devi Shaji, Ana Martinez Bulnes, Vincent P. Diego, Subhash C. Chauhan, Sheema Khan Sep 2023

Unraveling The Mechanisms By Which Smoking And Alcohol Alter Pancreatic Cancer Pathogenesis, Poornima Devi Shaji, Ana Martinez Bulnes, Vincent P. Diego, Subhash C. Chauhan, Sheema Khan

Research Symposium

Pancreatic cancer is the 3rd leading cause of cancer in United States with a 5-to-7-year relative survival rate. This can be attributed to the late onset of symptoms and diagnosis of the disease, which makes it unmanageable at its later stage. Ethnic differences in pancreatic cancer incidence have been reported, especially regarding higher incidence in African Americans. African Americans are more likely than Asian, Hispanic, or whites’ people to develop pancreatic cancer. They have highest incidence rate between 28% and 59% higher than other racial groups. The mortality rate for Blacks is 13.3 per 100,000 people, while for Whites …

Connectome Specific Harmonic Wave Analysis Of Disordered Brain States, Stephen A. Odunsi, Ihsan Salloum Sep 2023

Connectome Specific Harmonic Wave Analysis Of Disordered Brain States, Stephen A. Odunsi, Ihsan Salloum

Research Symposium

Background: Connectome Harmonics analysis is a novel neuroimaging framework that defines brain states as neural spatial patterns associated with different frequencies emerging within a brain. Frequencies corresponding to specific brain states, or connectome-specific harmonic waves (CSHWs), are estimated to be the building blocks of brain activity, linking cortical oscillations, functional connectivity, and structural connectivity. Using this framework, studies will examine CSHWs of patients to catalog and analyze the spatiotemporal neural dynamics of patients with disordered brain states.

Methods: By using MRI (or fMRI) and DTI data extracted from MRI scans of patients, cortical surface anatomy and the underlying neural tracts …

Pro- And Anti-Inflammatory Biomarkers As Predictors Of Response To Valproate In Patients With Comorbid Alcohol Use And Bipolar Disorder-Preliminary Findings, Ilya Blokhin, Lisa Harlow, Eleonore Beurel, Feng Miao, Dana Ascherman, Claes Wahlestedt, Ihsan Salloum Sep 2023

Pro- And Anti-Inflammatory Biomarkers As Predictors Of Response To Valproate In Patients With Comorbid Alcohol Use And Bipolar Disorder-Preliminary Findings, Ilya Blokhin, Lisa Harlow, Eleonore Beurel, Feng Miao, Dana Ascherman, Claes Wahlestedt, Ihsan Salloum

Research Symposium

Objective/Hypothesis: Bipolar disorder (BD) has the highest association with alcohol and other substance use disorders compared to other major psychiatric disorders. This patient population is particularly challenging to treat. We have previously shown that some patients with co-occurring alcohol use and bipolar disorders respond to the GABAergic agonist valproate (VPA), which is known to modulates the dopaminergic system, and also as an epigenetic modifier. Predictors of therapeutic response to VPA in patients with AUD/BD are not known, and the subgroup which would benefit from VPA is still to be identified. Recent evidence suggests that AUD promotes a pro-inflammatory state while …
