Mobility Device For Injured Us Army Corp Engineer, Jessica Jones, Robert Whittaker Jan 2015

Mobility Device For Injured Us Army Corp Engineer, Jessica Jones, Robert Whittaker

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background and Purpose: Low back pain affects 70-85% of American adults at some point in their life. Back pain can have a negative impact on a person's quality of life. A group of three engineering students and two physical therapy students collaborated on designing a mobility device for a US Army veteran to aid him in transfers and pain management. The purpose of this research proposal would be to assess how our client would respond to an individualized mobility device.

Case Description: Our client suffered lumbar disc injuries as a result of lifting and twisting a heavy object resulting in …

Electromyographic Analysis Of Abdominal And Low Back Musculature During Use Of An Experimental Stationary Bicycle, Bryce A. Kelly, Christopher L. Podoll, Kirk R. Van Slyke Jan 2007

Electromyographic Analysis Of Abdominal And Low Back Musculature During Use Of An Experimental Stationary Bicycle, Bryce A. Kelly, Christopher L. Podoll, Kirk R. Van Slyke

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background and Purpose. Currently, stationary bicycles do not incorporate exercise for the abdominal and low back musculature. An experimental stationary bicycle, the Magnus Cycle, has been developed to increase trunk muscle activation and, at the same time, provide aerobic conditioning. The purpose of this study is to assess the activity of the rectus abdominus, external oblique, erector spinae, rectus femoris and biceps femoris muscles during a stationary cycling setting and during a tilt-in-space setting of the Magnus Cycle.

Subjects. Sixteen subjects, both men and women, between the ages of 18 and 30 participated in this study.

Methods. Surface electromyography (EMG) …

Low Back Pain: An Orthopedic Review Of Sacroiliac Joint Etiologic Theories, Key Diagnostic Criteria, And Effective Manual Therapy Treatment, Michael J. Ressler Jan 1999

Low Back Pain: An Orthopedic Review Of Sacroiliac Joint Etiologic Theories, Key Diagnostic Criteria, And Effective Manual Therapy Treatment, Michael J. Ressler

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Physical therapists commonly evaluate and treat patients with referral of low back pain. There still remains great controversy whether sacroiliac joint dysfunction produces significant pathological problems. It is imperative that the therapist providing the care posses skillful knowledge in the areas of anatomy, biomechanics, evaluation, and treatment of sacroiliac joint dysfunction. These characteristics are required in order to effectively treat patients with low back pain possibly resulting from sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

The purpose of this independent study is to review existing literature with primary focus on the anatomy, biomechanics, evaluation, and efficacious manual therapy treatment of sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Primary …

A Review Of The Causes And Treatment Of Low Back Pain During Pregnancy, Dana Krenzel Jan 1996

A Review Of The Causes And Treatment Of Low Back Pain During Pregnancy, Dana Krenzel

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Pregnancy is a time of great musculoskeletal change for a woman. Complaints of low back pain are a very common occurrence at this time. Many women regard this type of pain as a normal adjunct to pregnancy. However, most types of low back pain related to pregnancy are either treatable or avoidable. Mechanical, hormonal, and vascular factors may all contribute to low back pain. Differentiation of these different causes of low back pain is crucial to providing the patient with effective intervention plans. Physical therapists can provide evaluation, treatment, and low back pain management techniques to the expectant mother. Exercise, …

Physical Therapy Evaluation And Treatment Of Low Back Pain During Pregnancy, Jean Chouanard Jan 1995

Physical Therapy Evaluation And Treatment Of Low Back Pain During Pregnancy, Jean Chouanard

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Low back pain (LBP) during pregnancy is a frequent complaint and is often considered a normal, nontreatable occurrence. However, much of the LBP of pregnancy can be eliminated with early intervention. Factors such as poor posture, mechanical changes, and relaxation. of ligamentous structures in the spine and pelvis are the most common explanations of low back pain. A careful history and evaluation are essential to identify the etiology and to guide an appropriate treatment. This independent study will be a literature review. Its purpose is to identify some of the causes for LBP during pregnancy and develop guidelines for evaluation …

Low Back Pain, Jeff Large Jan 1994

Low Back Pain, Jeff Large

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common disorders seen in the health care setting today. The cost of rehabilitation of LBP makes up a significant proportion of today's health care economy. Both physical and social factors have been associated with the etiology of LBP. Today's advanced diagnostic equipment has allowed the underlying pathologies of LBP to be better understood. In the past, different theories and techniques for rehabilitation have been utilized. Current rehabilitation of LBP has emphasized effective, cost-efficient prevention and education.

The purpose of this independent study is to research current theories of risk factors, pathologies …

Cigarette Smoking And Low Back Pain, Cindy G. Broden Jan 1993

Cigarette Smoking And Low Back Pain, Cindy G. Broden

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this independent study is to define presently existing theories linking cigarette smoking and low back pain. It also provides a detailed description of nicotine and its physiological and psychological effects.

There are four theories outlined in this study which could serve as explanations for the correlation of cigarette smoking and low back pain. The first is the chronic cough associated with smoking. This cough increases mechanical stress including higher disc pressures and poor union and healing following spinal fusion surgery. The second theory deals with the vascular changes caused by nicotine which decreases vertebral blood flow and …

Vertebral Subluxation Complex, Debbie L. Horn Jan 1993

Vertebral Subluxation Complex, Debbie L. Horn

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

At one time or another most adults have back pain. Despite the fact that back pain is as prevalent as the common cold, it has been as puzzling as the Bermuda Triangle. The primary problem is that in many patients it is not possible to identify the cause of symptoms, particularly if the symptoms are relatively minor. A review of literature reveals a wide variety of single causative lesions which would adequately encompass the various symptoms encountered. However, they are complex conditions which are highly oversimplified. This problem was recognized by Renaissance International who presented the concept of the Vertebral …

The Intervertebral Disc And Low Back Pain, Bruce H. Wessman Jan 1993

The Intervertebral Disc And Low Back Pain, Bruce H. Wessman

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Low back pain has an enormous socioeconomic impact in this country. Even with advancement in diagnostic technology, the incidence and severity of low back pain continues to increase. The intervertebral disc plays an important causative role in the production of low back pain. The intervertebral disc may cause direct discogenic pain by mechanical and/or chemical irritation of the nociceptor receptors found within the outer one-third of the annulus fibrosis, or cause back pain by an indirect method. The incidence of low back pain is first reported around the age of 25 and is most prevalent from ages 35-60. It is …
