Patient experience measurement is important for healthcare organizations to support the provision of high-quality care. Although previous research suggests age and gender may influence patient experiences, a thorough analysis of these associations remains unexplored. To address this gap, our research investigates the association of age and gender on patient experience ratings, using data from two widely used assessment tools: the Net Promoter Score (NPS) and the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). Data analysis was performed on a total of 19,228 survey responses, collected from 2018 to 2022, in a public metropolitan hospital in Sydney, Australia. Our …

The COVID-19 pandemic was highly disruptive to healthcare and negatively affected healthcare worker and patient experience on multiple levels. Patient Family Advisors serve an important role in partnering with health systems to improve patient experience, yet the work of many volunteer programs were interrupted by the onset of the pandemic, at a time when integrating patient voice into care delivery was sorely needed. Tell Me More® (TMM) is a medical student-driven initiative to build rapport between patients, students, and the healthcare team through patient interviews and collaboratively created posters. Patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) often experience impaired communication with providers. TMM has the potential to address the loss of patient-centered dialogue in interpreter-mediated communications. In this exploratory pilot study, we aimed to include LEP patients in TMM by using medical interpreter phones (MIPs) at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Northwell Health. The COVID-19 pandemic has invigorated efforts to address health inequities disproportionately burdened by racial/ethnic groups and individuals of low socioeconomic status. Measuring and monitoring patient experience is crucial to understanding why the gaps exist and identifying mechanisms necessary to close them. Electronic health records and digital health tools hold much promise in this regard and can lead to change. We present a case study describing the innovative efforts undertaken at Sutter Health, a large integrated health network in Northern California, to quantify gaps in health equity using electronic platforms and visualization modalities. Patient engagement is viewed as a means to improve patient care, increase population health, and decrease health care costs. Efforts to improve engagement are prevalent across healthcare, particularly through health information technology (HIT) tools such as patient portals. However, we know that not all patients have the same ability to engage, leading to potential disparities. We present the Engagement Capacity Framework and suggest that examining capacity for engagement would improve our ability to address currently unmeasured factors that facilitate engagement.
