An All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Educational Program: Is It Effective In Improving Attitudes, Safety Knowledge, And Behaviors In Adolescents Ages 12 To 18?, Kim Elaine Young Vickous Aug 2008

An All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Educational Program: Is It Effective In Improving Attitudes, Safety Knowledge, And Behaviors In Adolescents Ages 12 To 18?, Kim Elaine Young Vickous

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

All terrain vehicles (ATVs) are a popular source of recreation. For some rural adolescents, ATVs are frequently used for agricultural work. Whether for work or recreation, many adolescents operate ATVs improperly either from a lack of knowledge, poor judgment or they engage in risky behaviors resulting in injuries and fatalities.

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) has devoted resources to provide ATV safety programs to educate adolescents statewide. However, there are no known studies evaluating the effectiveness of this KDA intervention. Therefore, a pilot study was proposed to determine the effectiveness of The KDA ATV safety program in improving ATV …

Population Structure Of Limenitis Butterflies In Hickman, Kentucky, Mollie Johnson Aug 2008

Population Structure Of Limenitis Butterflies In Hickman, Kentucky, Mollie Johnson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Two species of Limenitis butterflies occur along the Mississippi River at Hickman, Kentucky: the viceroy, L. archippus, and the red-spotted purple, L. arthemis astyanax. Limenitis archippus occurs at a frequency that is 10-30 times more abundant than its congener, L. arthemis astyanax. Interspecific matings between L. archippus and L. arthemis astyanax are very rare in the wild and give rise to a hybrid form Limenitis archippus X L. arthemis astyanax form rubidus. Only 7 heterospecific pairings between the parental species and 72 "rubidus" individuals have been documented in the wild in all of North America. Of these documented cases, 2 …

The Influence Of Preferred Attentional Focus Strategies On Exercise Induced Changes In Affect, Erin L. Heltsley Aug 2008

The Influence Of Preferred Attentional Focus Strategies On Exercise Induced Changes In Affect, Erin L. Heltsley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Along with the numerous physical benefits of exercise, past research has shown that physical activity can alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression in both clinical and non-clinical populations. Yet, it has been suggested less than half of American adults exercise at public health recommended levels. Therefore, it is important to identify factors that may lead to an increase in physical activity and, subsequently, improvements in mental health. Previous research, for the most part, has neglected to investigate how preference for attentional focus strategy during exercise influences mood. In addition, previous studies that involved attentional focus and exercise have focused more …

Coregulation Of A Neighboring Est With Rhogap, Tia Hughes May 2008

Coregulation Of A Neighboring Est With Rhogap, Tia Hughes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It has been reported that the crossveinless-c locus of Drosophila melanogaster corresponds the RhoGAP88C gene. This determination was based on three criteria: proximity in genetic map position, complementation tests, and similarity of phenotype between RhoGAP88C RNAi constructs and the phenotype of hypomorphic cv-c' mutant homozygotes, both of which eliminate posterior crossveins (Denholm et al. 2005). There are several genes that map to this region of chromosome 3, including both RhoGAP88C, and a poorly annotated PDZ-domain containing gene corresponding to Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) Clot 13975 (approximately 60 kb upstream from the RhoGAP88C transcriptional start). A P-element insertion P[PZ]l(3)06951 is located …

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Hiv Status In Kenya, Kimberly Fletcher May 2008

Socioeconomic Determinants Of Hiv Status In Kenya, Kimberly Fletcher

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The spread of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is one of the greatest threats to stability and development in Kenya. The country's infection rate is estimated between seven and eight percent, making it one of the highest in the world. Several studies have been done that examine subpopulations such as truck drivers, sex workers, and migrants. However, to date there is little research that examines who, across the country, is contracting HIV. Kenya's 2003 Demographic and Health Survey includes data that make it possible to determine which groups have the highest odds of being infected. The question of who is contracting …

Effects Of Barren Reservoir On Upstream Fish Assemblages Of Barren River Tributaries, Mario Sullivan May 2008

Effects Of Barren Reservoir On Upstream Fish Assemblages Of Barren River Tributaries, Mario Sullivan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effects of dams have long been investigated by aquatic ecologists. However, most of the research has focused on the physio-chemical changes when a lotic system is turned into a lentic system, dams as barriers to migratory fishes, and the influence of introduced species often stocked into reservoirs. It has not been until relatively recently that the upstream effects have been studied. The central theme here is that while the dam proper creates a barrier it is possible that the resulting zone of standing water may also fragment streams from an otherwise connected river system. Stream adapted species that encounter …

Longitudinal Variation In Fish Community Along The Upper Green River Below The Green River Lake, Joshua Wilsey May 2008

Longitudinal Variation In Fish Community Along The Upper Green River Below The Green River Lake, Joshua Wilsey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The impoundment of flowing waters can cause decreased variation in flow and temperature, reduce habitat availability, and decreased mean temperature below a reservoir. These types of alterations can influence fish communities. Twelve sites were sampled along the Upper Green river in order to address the potential influence of impoundment on fish communities below the Green River Lake. The habitat features: mean depth, flow, dominant substrate, embeddedness, percent riffle, run and pool were measured. Temperature probes were placed at each site in order to measure temperature over an extended period of time. Backpack electrofishing and seining was used to obtain fishes. …

Effects Of Exercise Induced Fatigue On Postural Balance: A Comparison Of Treadmill Versus Cycle Fatiguing Protocols, Katherine Wright May 2008

Effects Of Exercise Induced Fatigue On Postural Balance: A Comparison Of Treadmill Versus Cycle Fatiguing Protocols, Katherine Wright

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of muscle fatigue after a treadmill versus cycle ergometer incremental test on postural balance indices and recovery time recreationally trained individuals. The Bruce Treadmill Test and the Incremental Cycle Ergometer test were used to induce fatigue. Each subject (N=16) performed both exercises, but the order of the exercises was randomized. The subjects performed balance measures on a Biodex Balance System via the Dynamic Balance Test at level 5 and indices were recorded as given. Balance was measured a total of nine times (pre-exercise, immediately post, and at 3, 6, 9, …

Pcr-Ddge Comparison Of Fecal Bacteria From Captive And Wild Populations Of The Endangered San Esteban Island Chuckwalla (Sauromalus Varius), Tina Kelley May 2008

Pcr-Ddge Comparison Of Fecal Bacteria From Captive And Wild Populations Of The Endangered San Esteban Island Chuckwalla (Sauromalus Varius), Tina Kelley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Most modern reptiles are carnivorous or insectivorous, whereas less than 2% of the >7,800 currently recognized species are considered to be herbivorous. Of these, herbivory is confined entirely to lizards; less than 3% of known lizard species eat significant amounts of plants. Most, if not all, herbivorous animals utilize a population of symbiotic microorganisms which can break down plant structural polymers. This study analyzes the bacterial populations from fecal/uric acid deposits of wild and captive samples of the endangered, herbivorous San Esteban chuckwalla (Sauromalus varius: Iguanidae). Substrate and diet samples were also analyzed. Most studies of digestive symbionts use indirect …
