‘Sarcopenia’ involves a progressive age-related loss of muscle mass and associated muscle weakness that renders frail elders susceptible to serious injury from sudden falls and fractures and losing their functional independence. This disease has a complex multifactorial pathogenesis, which involves not only age-related changes in neuromuscular function, muscle protein turnover, and hormone levels and sensitivity, but also a chronic pro-inflammatory state, oxidative stress, and behavioral factors – in particular, nutritional status and degree of physical activity. In the previous definition by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) in 2010, the diagnosis of sarcopenia requires the presence …

Introduction. The changes in the elderly’s daily routine including dietary intake and nutritional pattern may cause them to be more susceptible to malnutrition. The changes also increase the risk of sarcopenia that may lead to poor health outcomes such as fall injury, fracture, hospitalization, disability, or even death. Sarcopenia is more likely to occur in a nursing home compared to community settings. This study aimed to determine the difference in nutrition intake adequacy between institutionalized elderly subjects with and without sarcopenia in Bandung, West Java. Methods. A cross-sectional study was held in Ciparay and Budi Istri Nursing Home, Bandung, West …

Introduction. Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by a decrease in muscle mass accompanied by a decrease in strength and/or function. Sarcopenia is closely related to the aging process, but the mechanism of its occurrence is still not fully understood. Skeletal muscle is the largest organ in the human body, so the myokine produced through muscle contraction opens a new paradigm regarding the central role of muscles in regulating metabolism and other organ functions. One of the myokines that are currently found to affect physical activity is Irisin. This study aims to determine the role of low Irisin levels in serum …

Introduction. Sarcopenia is defined as a declined in skeletal muscle mass and strength along with its function may causes an increase in hospitalization, mortality, and health burden. Multi-factorial conditions of the aging process may cause sarcopenia. To assess those multi-factorial conditions in the elderly, a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) method should be used, in which comprises of socio-demographic, medical, psychological, and functional domains. This research aims to analyze the components of CGA, including age, gender, nutritional status, mental status, and functional status as factors associated to sarcopenia in the elderly community in Surabaya. Methods. This community research was a cross …
