ABSTRACT

Background- Stroke rates and risk factors may be increasing in young adults aged 18-64, especially black individuals. We sought to identify whether young high risk stroke survivors could be found at community health centers.

Methods- This was a cross-sectional analysis of the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey from 2006-2011. We used chi-square analyses, t-tests, and proportions to compare and describe stroke survivor visits at community health centers and private offices.

Results- Young stroke survivor visits comprise 48% of stroke survivor visits at community health centers compared to 31% of stroke survivor visits at the private office setting. Among young …

Purpose/Background: The aim of the study is to identify molecular biomarkers involve in patients who present with stroke and to determine their clinical usefulness as potential biomarkers in stroke patients as compared to patients without stroke.

Materials & Methods: All patients presenting with ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke at University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) will be screened for potential participation in this study based on following inclusion and exclusion criteria:

Inclusion criteria: male/female of ages ≥ 18 years, patients whose standard stroke admission order sets are obtained for clinical care.

Exclusion criteria: Patients <18 year, with the history of prior stroke or any neurodegenerative or neuroinflammatory disease except multiple sclerosis (MS), pregnant women and prisoners.

Mexican Americans (MAs) have been shown to have worse outcomes after stroke than non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs), but it is unknown if ethnic differences in stroke quality of care may contribute to these worse outcomes. We investigated ethnic differences in the quality of inpatient stroke care between MAs and NHWs within the population-based prospective Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi (BASIC) Project (February 2009- June 2012). Quality measures for inpatient stroke care, based on the 2008 Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center definitions were assessed from the medical record by a trained abstractor. Two summary measure of overall quality were also created …

Effectively engaging economically-disadvantaged ethnic minority communities for promoting health has proved to be challenging for a variety of reasons, including factors related to healthcare access, literacy, inadequate or ineffective cultural appropriateness of materials, and the relatively low priority for health due to competing demands related to economic hardship. We have developed a framework of Child-Mediated Health Communication (CMHC), which focuses on children as channels for carrying out health promotion interventions to parents and other caregivers. CMHC is an innovative, alternative strategy for engaging this underserved population, where traditional methods of health promotion have not been successful. We discuss the theoretical …

Background: Women have more frequent and severe ischemic strokes than men, and are less likely to receive treatment for acute stroke. Primary stroke centers (PSCs) have been shown to utilize treatment more frequently. Further, as telemedicine (TM) has expanded access to acute stroke care we sought to investigate the association between PSC, TM and access to acute stroke care in the state of Texas.

Methods: Texas hospitals and resources were identified from the 2009 American Hospital Association Annual Survey. Hospitals were categorized as: (1) stand-alone PSCs not using telemedicine for acute stroke care, (2) PSCs using telemedicine for acute stroke …
