OBJECT: Resected brain metastases have a high rate of local recurrence without adjuvant therapy. Adjuvant whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) remains the standard of care with a local control rate > 90%. However, WBRT is delivered over 10-15 days, which can delay other therapy and is associated with acute and long-term toxicities. Permanent cesium-131 ((131)Cs) implants can be used at the time of metastatic resection, thereby avoiding the need for any additional therapy. The authors evaluated the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of a novel therapeutic approach with permanent (131)Cs brachytherapy at the resection for brain metastases. METHODS: After institutional review board approval was …

PURPOSE: To investigate genetic, environmental, and systemic risk factors in prospectively identified subjects with the age-related macular degeneration (AMD) phenotypes of (1) reticular pseudodrusen without large soft drusen and (2) large soft drusen without reticular pseudodrusen. DESIGN: Prospective case-case comparison. METHODS: In a clinical practice setting, patients with AMD were sequentially screened using clinical examination and scanning laser ophthalmoscopy imaging to prospectively identify subjects (n = 73) with the phenotypes of (1) reticular pseudodrusen without large soft drusen (n = 30) or (2) large soft drusen without reticular pseudodrusen (n = 43). Subjects were genotyped for 2 alleles associated with …

We present two rare cases of in situ mantle cell lymphoma ("in situ MCL") and three cases of MCL with mantle zone growth pattern (MCL-MZGP). The patients include four males and one female, with a median age of 66 years (range, 52 to 86 years). Two present with isolated lymphadenopathy and three with multiple lymphadenopathy. At presentation, the complete blood count (CBC) and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) are normal in all cases. Histologic examination reveals an in situ pattern in two cases and a mantle zone growth pattern in three cases. The staging bone marrow biopsies show minimal involvement by …
