There are a number of national standards, educational frameworks and long lists of expected learning outcomes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health that Australian medical schools are expected to achieve. A recent evaluation found that many universities struggled to meet the requirements into their already crowded curriculum and many were doing it poorly. Bond University on the Gold Coast was no exceptionwith good intent but mixed results. In 2011 Bond commenced a renewal of its curriculum. Part of the renewal process was to examine what Indigenous health was being taught across the curriculum and how to better meet the …

What do we know about the rural and remote pharmacist workforce? Really, we know little about the rural pharmacist workforce in Australia: who they are, what their background is, why they choose to work rurally and why they leave or stay. The workforce shortages compare only with medicine despite the pharmacist student intake having doubled over the past decade, along with a significant increase in the number of regional pharmacy schools. Between 2008 and 2010 a large national pharmacist research project was undertaken, funded by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, to describe the rural and remote pharmacist workforce for the …

Background: Most Australian medical student places are government-supported, reducing the cost of tuition to about $10,000 each year, but some private places with fees cost up to $60,000 per year. In North America, debt at graduation is associated with different career choices. We explored the relationship between potential debt at graduation and future career preference. Summary of Work: Data were accessed from the Medical Schools Outcomes database Exit Questionnaire for both government-supported and full fee paying (FFP) students from 2008-11 in all Australian medical schools. The influence of gender, age, relationship status and fee-paying status on future career preference (specialty …

A New Model Of Clinical Placement In The Solomon Islands, Janie D. Smith, Peter Jones, James Fink

Background:

Makira Island in the Solomon Islands has a population of over 41,000 people, which in 2013 was serviced by one doctor, who worked in the hospital and travelled to remote sites, supported by highly skilled nursing staff. The capital Kira Kira is a very impoverished community with no formal governance structure, poor infrastructure and a large variety of public health issues that lead to fascinating medicine. During 2013 Bond University on the Gold Coast in Australia piloted final year undergraduate medical student placements at Kira Kira Hospital, with 33 students participating. By the end of 2014 over 50 final …

All health professionals require an understanding of different cultures to be able to work effectively and safely with their patients and other team members. In 2011 Bond University renewed its undergraduate medical program to include significant cultural awareness and Indigenous health education, as a result of community need and Australian Medical Council recommendations. This included in 2012 Bond establishing an Indigenous Health Unit and an Indigenous Health Working Party to implement its curriculum. For the past two years Bonds first year students have undertaken a compulsory two day cultural immersion process to increase their understanding of other cultures, particularly Australian …

Does Cultural Awareness Education Have An Impact On Students’ Attitudes?, Janie Smith, Sally Sargeant Jan 2016

Does Cultural Awareness Education Have An Impact On Students’ Attitudes?, Janie Smith, Sally Sargeant

Janie Smith

Background:

All over the world people are conducting cultural awareness programs in an effort to educate health professionals about working in a culturally safe way with their patients, in an effort to improve health outcomes. However there is little evidence that any of these programs have a long term impact on the cultural safety of the students practice once graduated. In fact recent research indicates that training programs have been largely ineffective in improving doctors cultural skills, their behaviour or health outcomes. In fact there is anecdotal evidence that some approaches to cross cultural education are having the reverse effect …

Peer Mentoring: Evaluation Of A New Model Of Clinical Placement In The Solomon Islands Undertaken By An Australian Medical School, Janie Smith, Peter Jones, James Fink

Introduction

Electives and selectives in developing countries are an important part of student learning experiences. During 2013, Bond University on the Gold Coast of Queensland in Australia piloted final year undergraduate medical student placements (n=33) at Kirakira Hospital, on Makira Island in the Solomon Islands. The placement was evaluated that year.

Methods

The clinical placement in Kirakira Hospital required 12 months of planning by the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine of Bond University in 2012. The evaluation of 2013 placements included a literature review; semi-structured interviews with participating Bond University and Kirakira Hospital staff, and with community …
