Purpose: To explore the relationship between injury severity and athletes’ quality of life, as well as the role of cognitive appraisal during participation restrictions. Method: A descriptive quantitative survey research design was used. Ten NCAA Division III athletes completed two self-report instruments: the SF-12v2TM Health Survey and a scale that ranked injury severity based on time-loss from sport. Results: Data analysis yielded three main findings: (a) mean mental health scores were lower than mean physical health scores in all injury severity categories; (b) three participants had higher mental than physical health scores; and (c) only four scores were beyond the …

To explore the extent of practices of formative assessment in health science education, a self-report questionnaire was administered to faculty members of nursing and allied health sciences of a south India university. Simple percentages were computed to explore the extent of practice of formative assessment and the ways in which it is currently used to help students learn in nursing and allied health science courses. The study revealed that there is room for improvement in the way formative assessment is practiced currently in health science education.

Purposes: This pilot study (1) assessed physical therapist students’ attitudes toward using YouTube to share health-related videos on the Internet, and (2) determined whether a cohort of physical therapist students would use YouTube, or similar technologies, to share educational information with other health care providers and health care consumers once they enter practice. Brief cognitive-behavioral intervention (CBI) was conducted in the emergency room (ER). The current literature on biomedical and psychological risk factors of migraine is reviewed briefly including studies demonstrating the effectiveness of CBI with such patients. The case study portrays CBI that assists a patient suffering from severe migraine attack. We cautiously proposed that CBI can provide patients with a sense of control and may offer empowerment for the personnel in the ER. An integrative approach to health care is suggested when assessing patients with migraine.

Recently, treadmill training has been introduced as a measure to improve the post stroke gait pattern, but there is still limited data on the use of the cycle ergometer. In 1965, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of ipecac for over-the-counter sale. For years, ipecac remained on the list of “must have” items for households with small children. Typically, Ipecac was used to administer an emetic quickly before reaching the emergency room or to prevent the patient from having to be referred to a medical facility. In 2004, new ipecac guidelines were published stating that the routine stocking and use of ipecac would no longer be recommended. The new guidelines would change what had been accepted for decades. The aim of this study was to delineate the language difficulties in Kabuki Syndrome. At presentation, the child with Kabuki Syndrome had waddling gait, dolicocephaly, and frontal bossing. On administering an Indian standardized test (Linguistic Profile Test), different aspects of spontaneous language production were analysed. Receptive language skills were within normal limits, but expressive language skills showed deficits in semantic and syntactic areas. Articulation errors appeared mainly due to poor oral-motor coordination and hypotonia. A dull flat pattern of speech was characteristic to the child.

Purpose: Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) accounts for 7-9% of all congenital heart diseases. It is fatal unless surgically corrected. Survival has improved overtime. However, neurodevelopmental outcomes have not been known until recently. This paper discusses the neurodevelopmental outcomes of patients with HLHS and the factors that influence these outcomes. Methods: A search of the literature was performed using several databases, medical textbooks and other on-line sources to locate research related to HLHS and neurodevelopment in HLHS. A representative, cross-sectional clinical skills assessment of 163 mid-level, rural-based, government health care workers was conducted in four districts of Nepal in June 2007. All Health Assistants and Auxiliary Healthcare Workers within the target districts were scored using checklists of standardized key skills in clinical encounters with model patients or clinical models. Participant scores were reported as a mean percentage in adult medicine 28(%), pediatric medicine 56(%), maternity medicine 35(%), orthopedic medicine 45(%), clinical procedures 59(%), and management 46(%). Though physical therapist consultation has been described as a means of enhancing care in the Emergency Department (ED), such services are rare and often poorly understood. This pilot study utilizes qualitative methodology for the purpose of describing how one group of emergency physicians experienced with physical therapist consultation in the ED perceive these services and the challenges associated with their provision. Transcripts of interviews with 11 emergency physicians were analyzed for recurrent themes. Purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to pilot the use of and explore the feasibility of an individualized professional learning plan (PLP) designed to guide the continuing education of athletic trainers (AT) based on their individual learning needs and explore the participants’ perceptions of its usefulness and feasibility.
