Exercise, Cognition, And The Aging Process Among Active, Competitive, And Sedentary Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Katherine Adams
Exercise, Cognition, And The Aging Process Among Active, Competitive, And Sedentary Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Katherine Adams
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Purpose This study aimed to compare the cognitive measures of reaction time and dual-task performance among recreationally active, master athletes, and sedentary older adults aged 50 years or older. Methods 59 late middle-aged and older adults between the ages of 50 to 88 years old participated in reaction time and dual-task tests of which consisted of multiple trials on the same day. Subjects were placed either into the recreationally active, masters athlete, or sedentary activity level group based on the Rapid Assessment of Physical Activity (RAPA) form. For the gait speed with associated dual-task component, subjects walked 10-meters at two …

Validity Of 24-H Void Duration As An Indicator Of Hydration Status, Miriah C. Hadley
Validity Of 24-H Void Duration As An Indicator Of Hydration Status, Miriah C. Hadley
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Context: Few user-friendly hydration assessment techniques exist for the general population to use on a daily basis. Objective: This study evaluated 24-h urine duration as a valid indicator of hydration status. Design:For two trials, subjects voided into a large, medical grade container at the first urge to void. For the other two trials, subjects voided at any level of urgency they desired. Participants were given a stopwatch and asked to record the duration of each void to the nearest whole second, voiding at a “normal”, unforced pace. Specific order of the trials was randomized and counter-balanced. Setting: Materials were …
Hydration Markers And Water Intake In 3 To 13 Year-Old Girls, Cody Shopper
Hydration Markers And Water Intake In 3 To 13 Year-Old Girls, Cody Shopper
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
INTRODUCTION: Recent data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) showed that more than 50% of children in the U.S. are hypohydrated. However, this assessment was based on a random single urine void which has several limitations in assessing hydration. Studies have shown that greater water consumption is associated with improved mood, cognition, increased physical activity and better overall nutrition. OBJECTIVE: To assess water intake and hydration status in 3-13 year-old girls. METHODS: 39 girls age 3-13 years-old (6.9 ± 2.9 y) collected their own urine samples for 24-hours on a Sunday. Subjects also recorded …
The Contribution Of Solid Food On Total Water Intake In 3-13 Y Children, Audrey Caroline Smith
The Contribution Of Solid Food On Total Water Intake In 3-13 Y Children, Audrey Caroline Smith
Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses
Introduction: Adequate hydration is important element of good health. Several studies indicate that the majority of kids are hypohydrated and do not meet dietary water intake guidelines. Some scientist also suggest that good hydration might be achieved by large consumption of food that are rich in water (i.e. fruits and vegetables). However, the information of food consumption on total water intake in children is limited.
Purpose: We evaluated the contribution of water from solid food on total water intake in children.
Methodology: For this cross-sectional study 81 children (35 female) 3 to 13 years old were randomly recruited to participate. …
The Acute Effects Of Caffeine And L-Theanine On Cognition In Older Adults, Lauren Tilley

The acute effects of L-theanine and Caffeine on cognition in older adults
Tilley, L., Gray, M., Stone, M., & Binns, A.; Human Performance Lab; University of Arkansas; Fayetteville, AR.
Introduction: Cognitive decline is an impairment that affects many adults and has the potential to be decelerated. Previous studies show that caffeine and L-theanine positively affect cognition in a young population. L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea that produces a relaxation affect. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the acute effects of caffeine and L-theanine on cognition in older adults. Methodology: Fifty-three older adults …
