Nurses hold a vital role in glucose management in order to ensure safety and quality outcome for hospitalized patients.

Background: Assessing serum and point of care glucose results and bringing abnormal results to the attention of the healthcare team can help maintain optimal management. Despite challenges to hypoglycemic protocol compliance, informed nurses can advocate effectively for their patients. Understanding insulin action and the effective use of evidence-based guidelines/protocols can help nurses promote optimal patient outcomes. Common barriers to glucose control and education of current best practices in the acute care setting were reviewed.

Background: For many health care organizations, pressure injury (PI) prevention strategies have become a priority focus to improve patient outcomes and associated costs.

Problem: A rural community hospital located in the Eastern U.S. experienced an increase in hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs), predominantly in the intensive care unit (ICU). In 2018, 17.4% of HAPIs occurred in the ICU.

Approach: Implementation of a Quality Improvement project in an adult ICU, providing education and on-going learning activities to nursing staff, and applying a standardized plan of care “bundle” for prevention interventions.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are preventable events with significant ramifications for both patients and hospitals. Proper training on evidence-based practices for catheter management is a vital component of preventing and decreasing CAUTIs. Following a review of the literature, evidence supports that CAUTI education with the use of a standard urinary catheter checklist for registered nurses (RNs) has the potential to ensure that knowledge is applied, thus decrease CAUTIs. The term workplace incivility is often replaced interchangeably with workplace bullying, horizontal/lateral violence, psychosocial harassment, intimidating behavior, and/or aggression (micro/macro). Workplace incivility in nursing has lasting effects on the profession through worsening the nursing shortage, contributing to low morale, negative working environments, safety issues for staff and patients, stress-related health problems, absenteeism, and decreased quality of patient care. Incivility can be from a variety of sources including: Nurse managers, clinical team leads, unit coordinators, physicians, patients, and other healthcare professionals. Buy-in by nursing executive leadership and evidence-based education for nurses is mandatory to address organizational incivility.
